Self-guided reading comprehension - Edgar and the Sausage Inspector

These enjoyable and accessible reading comprehension activities are perfect for the classroom or for home learning! The pack contains 10 reading lessons based on Jan Fearnley’s entertaining and high-quality picture book, Edgar and the Sausage Inspector. Which age range is this pack for? 5-7 years The objectives in this pack are based on the Year 2 English National Curriculum. It would also suit end of Year 1 pupils, or Year 3 children who are consolidating early comprehension skills. Is it useful for home schooling or remote learning? Yes – it’s perfect! The materials and learning are age-appropriate so you can be assured your child or class are covering the right objectives. The activities are self-guided, allowing for independent home learning, and the low threshold nature of the tasks mean that they are accessible for all children, regardless of their prior attainment. How is it self-guided? Instructions are broken down step by step and contained in blue boxes on each page. Children will need a reasonable level of reading to work through the activities independently. For more support, you might consider our digital versions of this resource which contain audio and video files that read each page and teach and model the more challenging activities contained in this pack. I have a child who cannot read many of the words in this book… Within this age range, comprehension targets apply to texts that children can read themselves and those that are read to them. Listening to and then working with the text is age-appropriate. My child will struggle with the writing… The pack contains a range of activities, including cut and stick, drawing and matching tasks so that it is accessible for most children. Where written answers are asked for, answers can be scribed by an adult or recorded as an audio file for children who are early writers or have a special educational need or disability. This reading pack focuses on children’s comprehension, not their writing ability, which will be a barrier for some at this age. Do I need to buy a copy of the book? The illustrations in the book are gorgeous and I would recommend children being able to look at them in detail (e.g. there are little ducks on each double page that my daughter enjoys looking out for). I’m sorry that I cannot include images or provide a recording of the book myself due to copyright. There are videos on YouTube of this story so you can get by if you don’t have a copy.
