I am an ex-primary head teacher and English, Maths and History specialist. I've mostly worked in KS2, often in Year 6. Although for the last two years, I've been working in Year 1, which has been delightful! All the resources have been used successfully with children in a range of schools all over the country. Learning Objectives: Starter: - To use short division. - To identify different long division methods. Main Lesson: - To divide numbers up to 4 digits by a two-digit whole number using the formal written method of long division (Year 6) -To use division including formal written methods, applying it to integers and decimals, (KS3) This lesson consists of: A starter focusing on using applying long division and a connect starter reviewing prior learning with regard to long division methods An Interactive Whiteboard teaching introduction for both Notebook and ActivInspire, to teach three different long division methods and to assess the children’s ability to solve long division problems when applied to decimal numbers. A 4 way differentiated series of calculations where children are expected to solve a series long division of decimal numbers (including a Challenge Activity where children divided by decimal numbers), and two Word Problem per ability group. Answers are supplied to ease marking. An AFL / Next Steps task based on a previous SATs question, which requires children to decode a long division word problem using mastery techniques.

LOs: Starter: To add and subtract large numbers Main Lesson: To solve addition and subtraction multi-step problems in contexts (Year 5 and Year 6) To develop their mathematical knowledge, in part through solving problems and evaluating the outcomes, including multi-step problems (KS3) This lesson consists of: A starter recapping on subtraction and addition of large numbers and 2 connect activities recapping on the different ways that addition and subtraction can be written, plus a set of differentiated word problems to allow children to work in pairs to decode, allowing you to establish children’s understanding of Word problems. An Interactive Whiteboard teaching introduction for both Notebook and ActivInspire, to establish an effective way to lay-out calculations and to test the children’s ability to apply column subtraction and addition to work problems. Learning Objectives Starter: - To perform (mental) calculations. - To revise factors, multiples and prime factors. Main Lesson: - To solve problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and a combination of these, including understanding the meaning of the equals sign (Year 5) - To use their knowledge of the order of operations to carry out calculations involving the 4 operations (Year 6) - To use conventional notation for the priority of operations, including brackets, powers and roots (KS3) This lesson consists of: A Starter consisting of a series of progressively harder, multi-step calculations and revision of common factors, common multiples and prime factors. A connect activity getting children to begin to understand why it is necessary to have a specific order when undertaking multi-step calculations. An Interactive Whiteboard teaching introduction for both Notebook and ActivInspire flipchart, to teach how to apply BODMAS to brackets and orders / powers. This includes a PowerPoint presentation showing defining, explaining and applying BODMAS to two different calculations. A 4-way differentiated series of tasks requiring children to use BODMAS to carry out multi step calculations with all four operations, with brackets, squared and cube numbers and how to balance equations. A stretch challenge including square roots. Answer sheet provided to support marking. A final AFL / Next Steps task, asking children to correct mistakes in 3 multi-step calculations.
