Common word game - "One breath box!"

A list of common words - put into a box and encourage children to choose one list. Can they say all of the words in the list with just one breath!? To incorporate Maths into the game, ask a partner to time the student to see how long it takes them to read the words on the list.

A great game for revising common words. Cut words and put into a box. Children take it in turns to choose and read a word. If they can read it correctly, it's there's! However - if a child chooses "BANG!", all their words must go back into the box.

2 extracts from "The Iron Man" by Ted Hughes, which can be used for guided reading or comprehension. Also attached is a prediction sheet, where children need to make sensible guesses as to who the Iron Man is before reading on.

Syllable game - "Oh no!"

Resource for counting syllables. Also good for students with speech and language difficulties. Cut the words into strips. Children take it in turns to pick a word then clap out how many syllables are in the word. If correct, they get to keep the strip. If a child pulls out the strip "Oh no!", all strips must go back into the middle.

Tricky word car park game

(1)
Spelling game. Write tricky words in the car parking spaces and ask students to use toy cards to "park" their cars in the words. Once the car is covering the word, can your students spell the words?

Handwriting game - letter formation and spelling practise rolled into one!

(1)
Two children roll a dice, and write the letter or word that corresponds to the number rolled. (Usually written on a whiteboard by teachers) The children "race" to see who can get to the top of their ladder first, and the teacher decides the winner based on the best letter formation and presentation. Also included are phonics flashcards which children can use.
