FOR THE LOVE OF LITERATURE

Average Rating4.40
(based on 966 reviews)

I love creating resources and spend far too much time doing it. Currently teaching mostly A-level English Literature, but there are a range of free and paid resources for all ages. I believe in challenging students with a range of ambitious material, but also believe that this needs to be underpinned by explicit direction on HOW students can develop their ideas in written form. Write better... think better... think better...write better... and so on.

Frankenstein Revision lesson - essay focus

(6)
A lesson plan and a few resources for a pre-exam revision lesson which also teaches essay skills. Helps students think about what's worth including in an essay and build analysis skills. You can cut up the essay in an envelope sheet so it's more kinaesthetic but you could just use as is.

Ted Hughes and 'Birthday Letters'

(5)
I love, love Ted Hughes and finally, I got to teach 'Birthday Letters' as a coursework text this year. . . very little in the way of teaching resources exists so I've created some. Here's an introductory powerpoint on Hughes and a very comprehensive guide to 'Birthday Letters' - absolutely indebted to Erica Wagner's brilliant book on BL, 'Ariel's Gift...' as well as other miscellaneous activities. I've got to say, I've never taught something that the students have truly LOVED so much. Give it a go...

The Great Gatsby - opening to chapter 2

Powerpoint should be explanatory but: a starter activity on semiotics to get them thinking about signification (interesting links can be drawn between boom of advertising in 1920s). Then group work focusing on the opening description of The Valley of Ashes and first intro to Myrtle and Wilson. Plenary activity on magical realism of Fitzgerald (taken from EMC guide) and then a homework essay, closely analysing this passage.(with OCR objectives but could be adapted for other boards)

A selection of a few bits: - Lesson plan and resource comparing Crooks and Curley's wife as one of the weak ones - Scaffolded chart to compare George and Lennie - Essay title and guidance for George and Lennie in chapters 1 and 2 - Character chart on all characters in novel, completed by me, exploring their significance to plot and to themes. You could give this to students or delete and get them to fill in it- you'll have the answers ready-done!

Persuasive writing revision lesson

(11)
A lesson plan and resources for a persuasive writing revision lesson - year 10 or 11. Includes fun starter activity and could be developed as to include writing a longer piece. Lots of fun and can be adapted to suit different abilities. The support sheet includes writing prompts. Taught this several times, also with a year 9 high ability. works a treat.
The Bloody Chamber SOW, resources and links to the Gothic

The Bloody Chamber SOW, resources and links to the Gothic

(3)
A plethora of resources for teaching Angela Carter's The Bloody Chamber... powerpoints, resources and tasks. Taught for OCR A-level English Literature as part of Gothic comparative and contextual study (to be taught alongside Frankenstein) but would work equally well as stand-alone for other components or as a coursework text. You also have here some extract question activities on presentation of 'the other' in Gothic literature and some teaching material and activities on Bram Stoker's 'Dracula', focusing particularly on narrative form and perspective. NB Puss in boots not there - we just read and discussed as it doesn't fit as part of our unit so we covered it unofficially) and the final three worksheets are designed by students - I got them to prep their own in the style of mine.... they did pretty well but if you are not going to adopt the same approach, I would check them before using as may need some editing. We then used them as teaching resources in a sequence of university seminar style sessions.

VALUE FOR MONEY alert... powerpoint, handouts, questions, key extracts and some teacher notes... all labelled and ready to just pick up and teach. A full scheme of work also included - I am teaching for OCR (extract then an interpretation question), but this covers off all A-level AOs... critics, analysis and some context.

Fun lesson on Kennings

(7)
Lesson (fully explained in powerpoint) on Anglo Saxon poetry more generally (linked into Beowulf), with a focus on kennings. Homework activity uses modern kennings poem as a model and lets them have a go at writing their own. I used with year 7 but could be extended to year 8. Lots of fun!

'Frankenstein' revision guide

I made this last year when teaching 'Frankenstein&' at AS for the OCR English literature spec (although could be adapted). I kept it to myself for a year but I think it&';s time to share the love. It's very detailed - could give to students as there are loads of activities but also would be useful if you&'re tackling the text for the first time - as a PGCE/NQT in particular, as many bits could be adapted into lesson activities. Fly free, Frankenstein.... into the &';darkness and distance'!
Reading 'The Handmaid's Tale' Critically

Reading 'The Handmaid's Tale' Critically

(16)
Encourages students to critically engage with ways of reading 'The Handmaid's Tale' as well as re-familiarising them with general critical positions. It also contains my 'coathanger' method which helps them to use critics' quotes PURPOSEFULLY! Works really well with visual learners who often use the 'coathanger' diagram to plan whole essays. Any questions, please ask.

Intro to Frankenstein

Powerpoint contains some contextual overview and objectives, geared to OCR AS spec, prose for exam... but could be adapted to suit other specs. Explains the pre-reading activity and includes discussion of ways of reading. Extracts for students to apply their knowledge to. Can be done if they've read the novel but would work equally well as a pre-reading activity.

Moon on the Tides: Relationships lessons

Using the excellent material provided by AQA and the TES, i put together powerpoints/ activities for the poems in the 'Relationships&' anthologies. They include activities, information, audio, video links. You can pick them up and go. The only one missing is &';To His Coy Mistress' as we approached that in a different way and also, i think some of the audio might be mixed up (don&'t know how or why?!) so do check before you go into lessons.

Lord of the Flies intro and critical reading

Taught as part of lit heritage controlled assessment for AQA as comparison with Macbeth (full details in powerpoint- just remove if not relevant!). Students had read the text independently. We began by discussing whether good and evil can be linear then read the article about the Zimbardo experiment to challenge further. Powerpoint provides intro to novel then the critics activity gets them to start thinking about interpretations. Really stretching but fruitful activity. Obviously this is very focused on my CA task but would work generally if teaching LOF as exam text.
