I love creating resources and spend far too much time doing it. Currently teaching mostly A-level English Literature, but there are a range of free and paid resources for all ages. I believe in challenging students with a range of ambitious material, but also believe that this needs to be underpinned by explicit direction on HOW students can develop their ideas in written form. Write better... think better... think better...write better... and so on.

I made my own poetry anthology for Year 8 compiling a selection of poetry focused on setting. Begins with some Romantic stuff then moves on to all sorts - Hughes, Atwood, Nicholls etc etc. Print and give to students - good basis for SOW.

A powerpoint that allows you introduce narrative in a critical yet accessible way. Filched from OCR critical anthology, David Lodge, Montgomery et al (who's Al? classic student comment). We then applied some of these ideas to McEwan's 'Enduring Love', but could be used with any prose text where narrative is a significant feature! The final slide contains an extract based activity with leading questions. Think critically, kids!

All these resources build to writing an essay: 'How are Beatrice, Benedick, Claudio and Hero presented to the audience in ‘Much Ado About Nothing’, up to Act 2, Scene 1?'. We looked at Elizabethan expectations of gender first, and how characters conform/rebel..then onto analysis. The powerpoint is an activity to get them thinking about individual word choice/close analysis (can print off and turn into a worksheet). The other stuff is to do with planning essay/ gathering ideas etc. There&'s also a scaffolded essay here for weaker students.

Inspired by a Teachit activity on the opening to ‘A Christmas Carol’, this activity is intended for y7/8 when introducing them to Dickens. There are four different extracts from Dickens’ novels and two group tasks associated with each - analysing how he ‘hooks’ the reader in, then preparing a dramatic reading for the rest of the class, intended to inspire them to read more. Lots of fun… and gives them ownership over their text.

Unusual, yes, but I taught this in year 13 as a part of 'satire' texts in time module. Goes well with 1984 - book is interesint and scarily now, so students find loads to think about.

This resource was developed when I was teaching 'The Handmaid's Tale' in Year 12 on the OCR spec for comparative c/work but could be used/adapated for any study of a prose text. The idea is to get the students 'asking the right questions' of texts, with a solid focus on assessment objectives (in this case A03/4). Hopefully the powerpoint explains it but essentially, each student (or in pairs) is a that allow the best possible answer. . . The 'steps' outlined in the powerpoint give them guidance.

I love, love Ted Hughes and finally, I got to teach 'Birthday Letters' as a coursework text this year. . . very little in the way of teaching resources exists so I've created some. Here's an introductory powerpoint on Hughes and a very comprehensive guide to 'Birthday Letters' - absolutely indebted to Erica Wagner's brilliant book on BL, 'Ariel's Gift...' as well as other miscellaneous activities. I've got to say, I've never taught something that the students have truly LOVED so much. Give it a go...

Taught as part of lit heritage controlled assessment for AQA as comparison with Macbeth (full details in powerpoint- just remove if not relevant!). Students had read the text independently. We began by discussing whether good and evil can be linear then read the article about the Zimbardo experiment to challenge further. Powerpoint provides intro to novel then the critics activity gets them to start thinking about interpretations. Really stretching but fruitful activity. Obviously this is very focused on my CA task but would work generally if teaching LOF as exam text.
