Genetic Disorders / Mutations: Karyotype Problem Sets Worksheets

(0)
I have bundled two versions of this genetic disorders worksheets. They both cover the same chromosomal diseases but one is short answer and the other asks the students to describe the disease symptoms. In both sets the students are given 8 karyotypes that they need to identify by gender and figure out what chromosomal abnormalities are in each. The students can then take that information and research it online or at a library to find the syndrome's name and symptoms (long answer set). The teacher key is included for both. The students worksheets are five pages long since they include an introduction in each set. The teacher keys are four pages long for each set. The picture file is just for advertising.*

DNA Processes Writing Task Cards for Secondary Science

(0)
It is important to promote writing across the disciplines. Sometimes it is difficult to come up with writing prompts. These task cards are specific to secondary science and they cover DNA processes such as DNA replication, transcription, translation, protein synthesis, exons and introns. There are also writing prompts which ask specifically about the organelles and molecules involved. The prompts are in pdf file format or power point and by adjusting the page settings during printing you can print 6 or more / less prompts per page. This activity can be used as a bell ringer, pop quiz or closing. It is a good exercise to make the brief students write longer and the novel writers write shorter answers. There are 30 writing prompts with instructions as to how many sentences they should write. You can edit the power point file to adjust the sentence requirements.

The RNA Power point chronologically presents the properties of RNA as they were discovered. The differences of the structure of ribose and deoxyribose and the differences between DNA and RNA nucleotides. Students will learn how to transcribe DNA into RNA and the function of the three types of RNA: messenger RNA, transfer RNA and ribosomal RNA. The RNA foldable covers the same topics and can be easily taught along side the power point or separately. It only requires one sheet of paper and easily fits into a composition notebook or spiral notebook. Excellent introductory lessons for DNA processes, DNA replication, and protein synthesis.

If they need to, they can add unknown character tiles as well and predict the traits an unknown character could have based on their placement in the Periodic Table. There are many different arrangements the students could potentially arrive at. I included three examples of possible arrangements. I require the student groups to use at least two properties to set up their tables. The students will mount the table unto a poster board and explain in writing on the board the reason for the set up and use arrows and color to show the periodic trends, groupings and trends within the periodic trends. The students are not constrained to only use a square to rectangle configuration. They are able to choose which ever arrangement they would like as long as it makes sense and can be successfully explained.

Coloring pages have recently become a huge hit all over the world. In my new series of word wall coloring pages, you can bring the excitement of coloring into your middle school and high school science classrooms. This set includes the words: symbiosis, endosymbiosis, mutualism, commensalism, predation, and parasitism. Word Walls are an instructional tool used primarily in the elementary classroom. While teaching in Texas my administrators decided they wanted secondary teachers to use the tool as well. It was a great success on many levels. Students took time learning about their word and creating a design for it. I always displayed all the words and the students took great pride in seeing their work displayed. The students also enjoyed looking at each other’s work. I noticed over time that my students would frequently look at the wall while we working. Especially during pop quizzes or bell work. The word wall truly helped my students to remember their vocabulary words and seeing them displayed all the time in class made it easier for them to refresh their memory when necessary. Each word wall poster has a word wall art graphic that students can color. There is a designated box to write the scientific definitions, synonyms or examples, antonyms or nonexamples and space to write a sentence using the word. I developed word wall coloring pages for my students who struggled with what to draw and write when working on word walls. I always offer a blank template for my self-motivated artists, but the coloring pages allowed my students who struggle with a means for creating a beautiful piece of word wall art as well. My favorite way to use word walls includes after a test, to introduce new vocabulary in a relaxing format, sub work or as extra credit. They are also a fun way to revisit words student’s struggle with. In your file, you will receive the word wall word/words you purchased plus the blank template. Electromagnetic Spectrum and Energy Power Point The power point covers the electromagnetic spectrum, light, photons, waves and their characteristics. the relationship between frequency, wavelength, and the speed of light are introduced with the formula for speed of light. Calculating the energy of the electromagnetic waves is also covered with introduction to Planck's constant and the energy formula derived using the constant. How we see light is presented along with slides for each type of electromagnetic ray and how they can affect human health. I also have a slide on cosmic rays since they have the most energy of all electromagnetic rays. Electromagnetic Spectrum Graphic Organizer (with energy and light formulas) The fold-out foldable covers the electromagnetic spectrum, light, photons, waves and their characteristics. The relationship between frequency, wavelength, and the speed of light are introduced with the formula for speed of light. Calculating the energy of the electromagnetic waves is also covered with introduction to Planck's constant and the energy formula derived using the constant. Electromagnetic Spectrum: Eight Types of Waves 1 pg Foldable This one page foldable has eight flaps for a description of radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, x-rays, gamma and cosmic rays. There are illustrations, instructions and a key included. Visible Light Spectrum: Speed of Light, Planck's Constant, Energy of Light In this worksheet students will use a visible light spectrum chart to calculate the wavelength of different colors of light. Then using the light equation and speed of light the students will figure out the frequency for each color. In the next step, students will use the frequency and Planck's constant in order to calculate the energy each color of light carries. Students will also need to color the spectrum. I have mine work out their calculations on a separate sheet of notebook paper and turn it in attached to their charts. I have included an answer sheet so you can see what the final should look like. For my younger students I give them the color wavelengths. For my physics students I have them use the chart and figure the wavelengths out on their own. I use this in both Chemistry and Physics.
