This is an extremely silly reading comprehension I wrote for my year 3 class. The goal was to teach them to read the text carefully, rather than answering from what they already knew. I designed this map to accompany The Once Upon a Time Map book by G. Hennessy. It has space for children to add their own coordinates. They can write down a list of things for a partner to find and then swap maps. It was loads of fun! You could also use this map for work on pirates or any topic to do with fairy tales. This is a classic maths investigation I liked to do with year 3/4s. I’ve simple made it pirate themed. The goal is to work systematically to find all the possible combinations and to keep track of your answers. We usually attempted this in pairs. This is maths investigation for year 3/4 children. It can be attempted in pairs of threes with support and manipulatives. It encourages children to recognise subtraction as the inverse of addition and shows how this can be used to solve problems. It’s Narnia themed, but this could easily be changed. This is a maths investigation using Cuisenaire rods to find different ways of making a half, a third and three quarters (equivalent fractions). We attempted this in a year 3/4 class in pairs and threes. You could also use it for older children. A diary entry model I wrote during our Charlotte’s Web topic. It’s from the point of view of Fern once she realises she can hear the animals talking. There are lots of directions you could take this. For example, you could ask the children to expand the entry, write from another point in the story or write from the perspective of a different character. This is a model of a diary entry in character. I created this during a year 3/4 unit of work on The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, by C.S. Lewis- My favourite of the Narnia stories! The children really enjoyed comparing the different personalities of the children in the story. We made a poster for each child and added words to it as we read. The children who were less confident wrote as Lucy, while the others were able to try writing as Edmund, Peter or Susan if they wanted. This model features highlighted expanded noun phrases and subordinate clauses to extend HAPS. It also has suggested spellings and vocabulary. You could adjust this for different age groups by simplifying, or adding more complex vocabulary and editing the amount of text. I hope you enjoy your work on this fantastic book :)

I created this for the end of our year 3/4 unit of work on the Stone Age to the Iron Age. This was a chance for the children to show me what they had learned about the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age by writing a report. They were allowed to draw pictures and diagrams with their reports. My Model features different conjunctions highlighted in red, as well as suggested spellings and vocabulary. You could make things easier for LAPs by letting them choose their favourite of the three time periods to write about. You could also challenge pupils by only giving them some of my model. It could even be used as a summative assessment. I always enjoyed teaching this topic and I hope you do too. Enjoy! :)

This is a maths trail I created for our primary school. Parents were invited to school for the afternoon to complete the trail with their children. Some teaching staff helped the children whose parents couldn’t attend do the challenge in groups. Other staff were positioned around the school to offer help and talk with parents. Several teachers were stationed at a desk where the participants could have their photos taken and get a certificate once they’d finished. There was also a refreshments desk manned by parent volunteers. Although I designed this maths trail using photos of my school, the ideas for the challenges are quite applicable to any school. You could use this file to give you ideas for your maths trail, or edit it using photos of your school. Just make sure you work out what the answers are! This is a playscript I wrote for my year 3/4 class while we were studying pirates. We used it to put on a class assembly for the parents. I split the class into 4 groups and had a different group perform each scene, but you could give it to one group to perform for fun, or as a nice extension task. The script includes a few interesting facts about pirates and lots of pirate lingo. My name is mentioned twice, so I would just change that to your name. I hope you enjoy it! :)

This is an investigation on money I made during our Anglo Saxon topic. I did this with a year 3/4 class, but older children would enjoy it too. The children work together in partners or threes to solve these money-based addition and subtraction problems. They can use whichever methods you have been teaching. This is a lovely art activity and a chance to write a set of instructions. We tried this in my year 3/4 class during our Stone Age to Iron Age topic. I gave the children my model instructions and they had a go making their own brooches in our art lesson (you could also classify it as D.T.). This is a diary entry in character I wrote as a model for my year 3/4 class. During our topic on pirates we read The Journal of Jake Carpenter by Richard Platt, and we decided to have a go at our own diary entries. We actually started by doing some drama; the children worked in groups and to explain to their parents they were leaving home to become a pirate. This really helped the children’s writing.
