KS3 Vietnam War: Why were American tactics so controversial?

KS3 History The Cold War, Superpowers, The Vietnam War Fully resources lesson investigating American tactics and their response to the Vietcong, discussing why they may be controversail Students watch a section of the Search & Destroy mission in Apocalypse Now and look at the who the aims of the US army, creating a success criteria for any US tactic. Students judge the impact of each US tactics (Rolling Thunder, Search and Destroy and Hearts and Minds) on the Vietcong, US troops, Civilians and US public opinion. This will allow students to judge why these tactics were controversial. Includes role play on why Search and Destroy was so tough for US troops alongside videos/images to aid understanding. GCSE skills of causation, judging vs criteria and explaining opinions Links perfectly to 9 1 GCSE History, can serve as an excellent base for development at KS4 All lesson activities and resources included. KS3 History, Should America go to war in Vietnam?

KS3 History The Cold War, Superpowers, The Vietnam War Fully resources lesson investigating the whether America should go to war in Vietnam in 1964 Students look at the situation in Vietnam under Ho Chi Minh and the growth of the Vietminh from 1939 to 63, looking at the increasing US invovelment. They then have to act at President Johnsons adivisors to make a judgement on whether he should go to war after the Gulf of Tonkin Incident, 1964. In this judgement students weigh up evidence including DIems rule, the Domino Theory, Containment and the arguments against intervention GCSE focus on causation, chronology, significance and second order concepts like communism/capitalism Links perfectly to 9 1 GCSE History, can serve as an excellent base for development at KS4 All lesson activities and resources included.
