This is a general lesson merging current affairs with transactional writing skills. Students will pick out language and structural techniques in an article, discuss everyday examples of techniques being used in media and write their own ‘good news story’ in the form of an article. Good for recapping and lifting the creating variety during home/online learning. Includes a pre written Kahoot quiz at the end for identifying techniques in different sentences. PIN included. Suitable for both key stages 3 and 4.

This lesson was recently used with a low ability year 9 girls’ group; successfully. This lesson will familiarize students with analyzing at word level: a key skill for both language and literature papers. Students will create mind maps of 6 high frequency words via dictionary/thesaurus work. Students will then write a series of paragraphs simply analyzing key words from a variety of sentences extracted from current news and popular culture publications. Plenary includes a score based peer assessment. Typically a 50 minute lesson; low to mid ability groups.

Content: This interactive double lesson will explore the themes in the play as well as some key quotations. Students will start the lesson by putting events of the play in chronological order. They will then take part in a paired discussion, followed by a timed writing task. the lesson concludes with a peer assessment exercise. Differentiation: Extension and challenge tasks will enable students to consider the social context of the play, giving them opportunities to consolidate existing knowledge. The main task is an essay with a strict success criteria as well as sentence starters to enable all learners. Plenary is a peer assessment activity with provided wording for feed back as well as specific elements of writing to look out for. Suitability: This lesson would suit any group who have studied An Inspector Calls-having read the entire play. It is mainly geared for revision purposes however can also be used as an assessment tool to test understanding and analytical writing. Typically a double lesson of 50 minutes each. Main task can be shortened to fit a single lesson if necessary.

This resource was created to fill gaps in and consolidate knowledge of key themes in the novella. Starter: plot sort (worksheet and answer sheet attached). There are two lessons whereby students will recap contextual factors related to the themes mystery and fear. The second lesson includes directed group tasks where students will collate evidence and inferences on a theme pertaining to each chapter. A follow up lesson could include a practice exam question with a focus on how Stevenson creates mystery and/or fear in the novella. Differentiation: stretch tasks, exemplary paragraphs, varied challenges of group work roles. Lesson time: 100 minutes.

This lesson was judged as outstanding in a recent observation. Students will build on their annotation skills and consider five areas for comparison: main ideas, language techniques, themes, structure and the effect on the reader. Students will work independently and compare two poems (Catrin and To a Daughter Leaving Home) Teachers are welcome to alternate the poems, by providing copies of different ones and simply changing the titles in the presentation. Included is also a detailed writing frame for comparative analysis. Suitable for a double lesson (each being 50 minutes.) Differentiated for all abilities. For the lowest sets, use simpler poems and break the lesson up over a week.

This resource would be suitable for revision of form and structure across all year groups (7-11.) The lesson focuses on two articles to begin with. Students retrieve simplistic information as well as have the opportunity to develop their responses using PEA style paragraphs. Pair work is encouraged to identify four types of structural devices in each article: dialogue, facts, statistics and language. Pack includes copies of extracts. Latter part of the lesson includes an extract from Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World. Teachers may wish to simply focus on the first part of the lesson-the articles, as they are more accessible to lower sets. Duration: approximately 50-100 minutes

Assessment Focus: WAF5 An outstanding, well paced, interactive lesson which covers the conventions of writing to persuade. Students will study tone, review and test their knowledge of language techniques, and use punctuation to add expression to their writing. Students are also given opportunities to take part in ‘mini tasks’ lasting 60 seconds each, throughout the lesson, offer peer reviews and practice their spelling, punctuation and grammar skills for WAF5. Main independent task includes success criteria and prompt questions. Suitable for a double lesson: mid to top set ability groups, however lower sets would benefit, simply split the tasks over 2-3 lessons and allow an in-depth revision lesson on the list of language techniques provided-or simply exclude the more complex techniques from the list. KS3/4.

This lesson is designed to support students who struggle to answer questions relating to AO2 (analysing language and structure in a text.) Most suitable for a KS4 class (mid-high ability) Lower sets/KS3 can access the lesson by including some close reading exercises with the use of a Dictionary and Thesaurus. Teachers can then set a comprehension task prior to the annotating and extended writing tasks (e.g. rewrite the extract in your own words) and plan to assess based on AO2 only. They would then have no need to include the exam based tips/timing suggestions. Detailed lesson plan included, along with a model response from the top band and level descriptors for self assessment. Lesson duration: approximately 90 minutes/2 double 50 minute lessons Pack includes suggested timings for answering questions and practical tips to aid in exam nerves.
