The pupils have to plan flights on various continents using Bearings to work out the direction of travel, and Speed, Distance and Time calculations. Pupils learn how to estimate square roots of numbers using only a pencil, ruler and a pair of compasses. Each of these documents contains 30 puzzles which I have used over 3 academic years as 'puzzle of the week&'. I have a folder on the wall and pupils help themselves to printouts and they hand them into a box in my room, receiving merits for correct answers. Many of the puzzles are not necessarily my own work, just things I have found over the years! Its worth mentioning that they aren&';t all Maths-based, although most are... I made this based on something I found in my old Maths books from school. As it happens there is also a Boardworks slide which does this really well too. Students have to try and work out which expression will give the biggest answer when a value for x is substituted in. Of course, it isn't that simple and they find that the answer varies depending on the value used. It is a good opportunity for them to consider how drawing graphs can help find whereabouts solutions might lie. I have also included some blank autograph axes which can be used to plot the graphs more dynamically and find what regions are highest for each. Extension questions could include finding expressions where one is always bigger, one which is higher above a specific value for x etc. Lots of opportunity for extension - students could also use Autograph themselves to experiment! These 3 lessons are aimed at higher ability pupils who have covered linear sequences before, and need a quick recap but then an extension into harder work. Lesson 1 - Generating much more complicated sequences and finding patterns in the differences. Lesson 2 - Using the patterns they found to work out the nth term of quadratics/cubics etc. Lesson 3 - Graphing the sequences and their differences and finding links between them. Lots of questions on this idea (you have to look at it to properly understand what it is all about!). You will need to write on the powerpoint in the plenary...
