I qualified as a secondary PE teacher in 2007. For the last two years I have been working with local primary schools, training primary teachers to teach high quality PE and helping organise school sport. I love physical education and believe all students deserve 2 hours of good quality PE. I am uploading schemes and lesson plans that I have used and have worked well.

Physical Education is much more than practical skills, therefore if we assess in physical education we should consider three main areas; practical skills, cognitive skills and social and emotional skills. This is a generic assessment that covers a child’s development in all areas of KS1 and KS2 physical education. I suggest you assess at the end of each topic area or 2- 3 times a year. How do I use this? The yearly targets are based on the new national curriculum, this is a simple document, the teacher should assess 3 times per year. Each target has three columns, one for each term. The teacher simply puts a; . for developing, / for emerging and a X for sustaining. This assessment allows the teacher to follow the progress of the students throughout the year and use the results to plan high quality physical education.

Physical Education is much more than practical skills, therefore if we assess in physical education we should consider three main areas; practical skills, cognitive skills and social and emotional skills. This is a generic assessment that covers a child’s development in all areas of PE in KS1. I suggest you assess at the end of each topic area or 2- 3 times a year. This assessment is designed to help the students understand their own learning. This will stay in their mentoring folder throughout the key stage How do I use this? At the end of the term I set the students a challenge that they can independently work on, I ask my TA to attend this lesson and she will pull out 6 students at a time and go through the assessment criteria with them. They will tick a box if they feel they have achieved it, they can put a dot in the box if they are still developing. Not all of the boxes will relate to the unit of work, so it does not take long to go through. Result? Students will know what they are good at and understand how they need to improve. The students understand the importance of head, hands and heart. The students become responsible for their own learning and are enthused to develop further within physical education.
