This presentation is simply a reminder - with examples - of the rules. The examples are introduced one by one, so could be used by teachers as a written exercise, dictating each sentence before showing it on screen.

This is the fifth in the apostrophe series. It deals with common problems: how to deal with plurals that don't end in 's', when to use an apostrophe after an abbreviation, its/it's, who's/whose, your/you're, their/they're. This is an activity called Sweet Talk, a public speaking exercise for pupils from Y4-Y9. Hits 4 objectives for presentation and communication. The resource consists of a presentation to introduce the lesson, full and clear lesson plan, and three resources files (mark sheets for pupils' use, topic cards and reward tokens). Children are given time to prepare their Christmas themed topic, after which they speak for a whole minute to the class. Each member of the class assesses the performance and scores it out of 3. At the end of the session, scores are compared (show of hands), and pupils receive sweet tokens according to the number of points they are awarded. These are then cashed in for teacher goodies. It's an activity I invented one Christmas, and which subsequently became firmly embedded into the weekly timetable. Parents either love it or hate it. It is valued by those who notice and appreciate the increase in their child's confidence and articulacy; it's much less popular with those who resent having to get involved with homework!

Present continuous, present progressive are the same thing. So are imperfect, past continuous and past progressive. A thirty minute quiz activity for testing subject knowledge, encouraging discussion, and generating enthusiasm in any classroom. Hardly any teacher preparation is required. This quiz format can be used for any subject. The teacher makes a list of 20 questions on the topic pupils are working on. These can be delivered orally or typed onto the on screen blackboard. There is an optional one minute timer (with sound effects) to focus thinking. Pupils are divided into four mixed ability teams, with one pupil white board per team for writing answers. Scores for correct answers are added to the on screen display. (They can also be deducted if necessary. NOTE: You need to ensure that macros are enabled on your computer in order for the on screen blackboard to work. A security warning will appear when you load the file asking if you want to enable content.

The text is the scene where the Ghost of Christmas Past takes Scrooge to view the episode when his fiancee, Belle, tells him the relationship has to end. The comprehension exercise is accompanied by a mark scheme.

This is a PowerPoint game consisting of over 100 slides. It’s great for starting a lesson - played as a whole class vocabulary challenge. Good for plenaries too and as an occasional filler activity for any subject. The teacher selects the initial category from the first slide without letting pupils see it. The go button on the on screen timer starts the clock, and a word is displayed. Pupils have a minute as the clock ticks to write as many words associated with the on screen word as they can. At the end of the minute, the word disappears, an alarm rings, and a link arrow to the next category appears at the bottom of the screen. Alternatively, the resource could be used as a speaking activity on the lines of the Radio 4 Quiz show: pupils have one minute to talk (without hesitation, deviation etc) on the topic displayed. It generates a lot of excitement in the classroom! Good for adults too!

This is an introduction to the possessive apostrophe, dealing with singular nouns (apostrophe before 's') only. The pack contains a presentation in both PowerPoint and PDF format. The PDF version would be ideal for making classroom posters. There is also an exercise where pupils have to insert missing apostrophes into 20 phrases. Answers are provided. The exercise should be written out in full, rather than allowing children simply to insert apostrophes onto the worksheet itself, as they need to leave a space between the noun and the 's' rather than joining letters.
