In this lesson students will work towards the objective: use the idea of the Earth’s rotation to explain day and night and the apparent movement of the sun across the sky. They will first learn about how our understanding of day and night has changed over time before understanding the science behind the suns ‘apparent’ movement across the sky. They will also learn how sundials work before explaining what they have learnt on the activity sheet. They will then learn about the seasons and the science behind the concentration of the sun’s energy on the Earth’s surface. They will be taught how this links to time zones and again will explain their understanding through the activity sheet. The engaging presentation- with links to online video clips and the activity sheets are all provided. A knowledge organiser for Earth & Space is also included. In this lesson, students will clear about Carl Linneaus, the father of taxonomy, and his system of classifying and naming organisms. They will learn what classification is, they will watch a video about Carl Linneaus and will learn about his system which classifies organisms acorrding to the domain, kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, and species. Students will investigate these terms and will research their own choices of creatures and how they would be classified. This is an engaging lesson which comes with an interactive power point presentation and necessary worksheets. It is designed for Year 6 but could easily be modified to suit lower KS2 and KS3. Science Year 6 Microorganisms helpful or harmful? Mould Experiment

Microorganisms are small organisms invisible to the naked eye because of their extremely small size. They are grouped into various groups like Bacteria, fungi, algae, protozoa and viruses. Many of these organisms are useful to human and nature while some are harmful and even cause diseases. In this lesson, students will learn about the 5 different types of microorganisms: fungi, bacteria, algae, viruses and protozoa. They will watch videos which explain their dangers but also their uses and they will tasked to determine which is helpful and harmful from the examples given. Following this, they will carry out an experiment looking at the conditions which cause mould to grow on bread. The experiment investigation sheet is provided. This is an engaging lesson which comes with an interactive power point presentation and all corresponding activity worksheets. In this lesson students will learn about Darwin’s theory of evolution and how it can be explained through natural selection. They will watch an engaging video clip, look at the example of the peppered moth and Darwin’s finches on his voyage aboard the HMS Beagle. They will then investigate Darwin’s theory derived from finches by experimenting with different beak types collecting different food. They will consider how this showed that successful animals adapt to their environment. By the end of the lesson they will have been able to demonstrate the theory of natural selection!
