This sequence of lessons studying newspaper reports is based around the theme of Space. It looks at a model text about Tim Peake’s journey to space and over two weeks teaches students how to structure a newspaper report part by part. Each lesson comes with an engaging powerpoint presentation and all relevant material. Included is a unit planning overview so you can see how the lessons progress. At the end of the unit, the children are tasked to write their own newspaper reports using the techniques they have learnt. This three-week unit of work is based on the text Pig Heart Boy by Malorie Blackman and the Talk for Writing model with a baseline assessment- planning- imitation- innovation- independent application- final assessment. The pupils will learn what the features of newspaper reports are and how to identify bias. They will look in detail at a ‘model text’ and will learn this off-by-heart to help them reproduce similar sentence structures and vocabulary in their own writing. Through teacher modelling, they will embellish the class version on kidney xenotransplantation before writing their own independently using the techniques they have learnt.
