KS2 WRITING - VERY SHORT STORIES WITH A TWIST

(2)
An instant writing lesson or homework task. Just photocopy and use. Contains all you need. I have always found that children really struggle with plot development in their stories which holds them back. Twist paragraphs are a great way to get them focused on plot and engaging their reader. You will find an example of a short twist story to share with the children. This is followed by 3 prompts which lend themselves to twist endings to guide the children to success. The lesson explanation is packed with ideas for possible twists linked to the children's activity so you don't even have to think. HOPE YOU ENJOY. I TRY TO KEEP IT SIMPLE. FEEDBACK IS WELCOMED.

KS2 WRITING PACK 3: LIFE'S GOLDEN MOMENTS - Autobiographical writing pack

A really positive and uplifting writing unit where children will learn how to structure and write about a golden moment in the life of a famous person, someone from history or their future selves. Contains: A resource pack containing all the copies of work and planning sheets required for the unit. A 26 slide Powerpoint file which takes both teacher and pupils through the whole writing process step by step. Just follow the slides. A planning breakdown with notes and tips of how to teach the unit. Planning notes are broken down into 4 separate sessions. Very easy to follow and everything is ready to just print and use. It is designed so that it can link to any topic you are studying. It can just slot in. It is completely cross-curricular. It also stands as an excellent way to teach autobiographical writing in literacy. Children begin by looking at Susan Boyle’s BGT audition from 2009 - her golden moment. They then analyse a modelled piece of writing based on this event and find a structure. Following this, they look at another piece of modelled writing based on Neil Armstrong’s golden moment when he stepped onto the moon. This follows the same structure as Susan’s writing. Using the framework they have discovered, the children now have all the tools they need to structure their own piece of writing based on a person of their choice. Through this unit, the children are taught how to use a variety of writing tools to engage their reader: How to introduce the setting subtly and drop breadcrumbs to gradually unfold the story. How to incorporate famous quotes into their work cleverly. How writing in the present tense engage the reader. How to use cohesion cleverly to engage the reader and give a sense of closure and satisfaction to their stories. TRIED AND TESTED - IT WORKS!

TRAGIC STORY WRITING PROMPT + MODELLED EXAMPLE Just print and use

You need to show the children good examples of writing to make them improve. I believe it is the quickest way to create better writers in your class. Model it. Every day. That’s why I always do some of the writing tasks I set my classes myself and shared my writing too. It works! Have a quick talk about how writers engage the reader. See what they know. Give out the prompt sheet and just let the children write. You will be amazed at what some of them will come up with. After a set time period (30-45 mins) just share some examples. Find some good examples of how they engaged the reader, even if it’s only one sentence or line. You have to start somewhere. Make a list of things we can do to engage the reader. Then share the example about Annie. For this piece I used to give them the tip about starting and ending their writing with the same phrase. This can be really powerful. I would always just share one tip or focus per piece. Add it to the list. I guarantee the next time you do some writing, some of the children will start and end their piece with the same phrase. Especially if you keep referring back to it. As the year goes on, you have more and more tips to focus on. They will use them in their own work. I have loads of these short bits of writing and each one has a different focus or sometimes I repeat the same focus again. The more they hear, the better they get. Model writing. Constantly. If you want more examples then just leave a review and I will add some more model stories and prompts. They make great homework tasks too. Enjoy.
