Nesta's Ark

Average Rating4.50
(based on 4 reviews)

I run a mobile educational zoo called Nesta's Ark. We visit schools, universities and organisations with our animals. Before setting up my Ark I was a teacher of Design Technology, ICT and Maths as well as a supply teacher covering all age ranges and most subjects. I marked Maths SATs for 7 years and now moderate and mark for OCR. I was an adviser for the Smart Skills ICT KS3 books and wrote the cross curricular links. Here are some of my worksheets that I use along the way.

This is a presentation to explain place value. It takes a comical look at place value using frogs. So what would you do if you had 10 frogs jumping around? Yes…put them in a box! It is a different way of looking at sets of numbers to show the decimal system. Please feel free to download and let me know what you think.

In this pack you will find a Guide for Teachers and 14 worksheets. There are ideas on how to present the sheets. This pack uses abstract percentages to represent data in an interesting way using rectangles and more unusual shapes. It is a nice follow on from my Representing Percentages pack which investigates using dials or charts. This pack was designed to supplement the Rainforest, Biomes and Continents booklets.

Representing Percentages Pack

In this pack you will find a Guide for Teachers and 8 worksheets. There are ideas on how to present the sheets. Sheets 1 and 1b give practice for representing percentages using only units of 10. Sheets 2 and 2b look at how to represent percentages ending in 5 and give practice of measuring using a protractor. Sheets 3 and 3b take the activity further and look at how to represent more difficult percentages and give practice of fine measuring using a protractor. Sheets 4 and advanced are real life percentages which can be used in a display and link to other packs available such as the Rainforest, Biomes and Continents booklets. This pack goes from abstract percentages to real life examples and is a great way to show why we need to learn Maths. They can be used for cross-curricular projects or in Geography for evidence if Numeracy skills. Key Stage 2 I suggest that sheets 1 & 1a are one lesson and sheets 2 & 2a are a second lesson. You may want to look at properties of shapes, angles and how to use a protractor before you visit this set of worksheets. Sheets 3 & 3b are a third lesson although many students may not be able to complete them. Printing on A3 may help with using the protractors to get a more precise result. Sheet 4 and Advanced could be used for displays. Key Stage 3 Most groups should be able to cope with sheets 1 and 2 in one lesson with 1b and 2b as extensions. You may want to look at angles and how to use a protractor before you visit this set of worksheets. Sheet 3 and 3b should take a complete lesson between them. Sheet 4 and Advanced could be used by the Geography department in a cross-curricular project.

Class Pet Project

This is a plan, workbook and extra sheets for a project to decide which animal would make a good class pet. The workbook includes spaces for research, planning where the pet would be in the room, comparing aninals. Students look at the cost of buying and caring for the animal as well as considerations such as space required, habits, and wheter the animal is nocturnal. This can be used to aid students with long term planning, measuring, representing size, budgeting and presentation skills. The teachers' plan gives ideas for activities and ideas for students to create their own artefacts. The maze worksheet can be used for a starter. There is an extra sheet for investigating extra animals. Please ask if you think of more worksheets you would like added to the pack as I wll be happy to consider any improvements.
