This is a selection of books recommended by teachers from across the UK following a 2019 event aimed at increasing diversity in the curriculum. These books have helped students, teachers, and parents understand more about cultural identity, race, and racism, as well as the power structures that uphold racial bias. It is intended as a starting point if you are interested in reading the works of BAME authors and/or if you are seeking to learn more about the reasoning behind the recent Black Lives Matter protests.

This workbook allows students to explore Shirley Jackson’s 1948 short story ‘The Lottery’ through a number of different activities. Students can work through the workbook independently (there is space to write directly into the workbook) or teachers can pick and choose activities for the classroom. This download includes: Complete Student Workbook with a variety of tasks to build both comprehension and analytical skills. Extension activities and a glossary are also included. Teacher notes with answers to all questions in the Student Workbook, as well as suggested teaching approaches and ideas for differentiation. The activities in the Workbook equate to roughly 5 or 6 lessons. Whilst the material would suit a Year 9 group well, the activities could be used for KS4 or even lower down in KS3 (e.g. for a high ability Year 8 group). Set of 24 comprehension questions (plus extensions) on Shirley Jackson’s 1948 short story ‘The Lottery’. The activity will last approximately one lesson. The questions are divided into six sets, each with a different theme/point of focus. Each set also contains a ‘bonus question’ which can be used as extension work. The activity could be used as group work or could be worked through individually: Small group option: Each group receives a ‘mission’ (one set of questions) to complete. After each group has had 15 minutes or so to find the answers, they can then present their answers to the rest of the class (page 3 of the workbook gives students a space to write up findings from the other groups). Individual option: Students can either work through all the questions, or perhaps focus on one or two of the ‘missions’, depending on their ability. *This activity is from a larger Student Workbook which can be purchased (along with the answers to the questions and Teacher Notes) from my TES shop: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/resource-12752108

A Midsummer Night's Dream Hermia and Lysander

A resource originally designed for a mixed ability group of Y7 students, however it would also work well for low ability Y8 or even Y9 as a starter activity. This is a writing template which students can use to write an email from Hermia to Lysander. There is a middle ability version and lower ability version with a word cloud. Higher ability students could be provided with the task in the main box only for extra challenge. Designed to consolidate knowledge of the text, specifically why Hermia is not allowed to marry Lysander and what would be the consequences if she defied her father’s wishes.

This activity is ideal for group work and semi-independent revision. Get students into groups of 4/5 and give them each an extract (this works well when extracts are printed onto A3 paper). They should rotate the extracts after every step. Resource includes: PowerPoint with instructions ‘Macbeth’ extracts (Word doc) ‘Romeo and Juliet’ extracts (Word doc) Please leave a review if you use the resource!
