Oliver was a key figure in the development of early jazz and was known for his virtuosic cornet playing and innovative approach to improvisation. He was famous for his using mutes, derbies, bottles and cups to alter the sound of his cornet. King Oliver was also the mentor and tutor of Louis Armstrong.
