The Terracotta Army is one of the wonders of the ancient world and a cultural relic which many believe needs to be protected with the upmost seriousness. It’s one of the top archaeological finds of the twentieth century at over two thousand, two hundred years old and part of the world’s largest imperial tomb complex at four miles square! As recently as March 2015 an almost complete crossbow was unearthed. The bow back, string, crossbow body were all well-preserved. These worksheets help your student to discover more about the Terracotta Army and who discovered them, local farmers who were digging a new well. Their task is to write a letter to their family as one of the farmers who first discovered the Warriors or a report for a magazine as one of the archaeologists who helped unearthed the other pits.

The Hanging Baskets of Babylon conjure up romantic images of lavish, luxurious and colourful flowers cascading down over light brick walls. The awe-inspiring sight must have been why Herodotus included it in his list of Seven Wonders. However, they are not standing today and there is a distinct lack of their documentation in Babylonian history, so have evoked debates as to whether they existed at all. These worksheets aid your students in carrying out research into the Hanging Gardens as well as being able to examine and analyse a sources reliability. The difference between fact and opinion is explored to help the students answer whether they thought the Gardens actually existed. The worksheets conclude with a discussion about our beliefs, how we develop them and whether having different beliefs effects our world

The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus was built for Mausolus, the second ruler of Caria from the Hecatomnid dynasty who died in 353 BC. As the man who refounded Halicarnassus, Mausolus was entitled to receive cultic honours and a tomb on the central square of his city, in accordance with Greek custom. The person in charge of this project was Mausolus’ grieving widow, Artemisia II, who, incidentally, was also his sister. These worksheets asks the students to use a discription to draw their own interpretation of how the Mausoleum once looked as well as discuss whether treasures found by a British Museum team should be returned to Turkey or remain in London.

New Year is a great time to reflect on the past year and set goals for the new one. This worksheet/poster helps the students to look back over and share what they are proud of from 2022, look forward to 2023, and set goals and achievement they wish to accomplish. February can appear to stretch long into the distance: there’s the afterglow of Christmas and hopeful New Year’s resolutions, but it’s grey and cold outside. It can often be a struggle to last until the first blooms of spring so why not take a short time each day to think about all the things we are thankful for and can look forward to, to help melt away the winter blues…

This project-based unit can be used as an individual or group activity, or assessment. The students are tasked to create a leaflet for the United Kingdom Antarctic Heritage Trust to help promote fund-raising and raise awareness to preserve the Antarctic huts used by explorers of the past. A breakdown of the leaflet is given which includes the format to be used, including the colour scheme of the Antarctic tartan. Each page is assigned a topic including the front cover, who the AHT are, information about Antarctica and a set of rules to be followed by visitors and tourists. Several websites are given to help with research, although independent research is encouraged, and a 3 minute film looking at why people wish to visit Antarctica, and the impacts they can have, has been included. In addition, a 22-page booklet produced by the Britain’s Antarctic Heritage gives an insight to their aims, the history of the area and what they wish to accomplish in the future. This unit of work begins by asking students to define religion and why they think people choose to follow them. The students complete a graph showing the percentages o religions in India and demonstrate what they believe they already know or understand of Hinduism. The story of ‘A Mysterious Beast’ helps to illustrate the diversity of Hinduism through a jigsaw-tyle game and the structure of the Hindu gods is explained. Reincarnation, karma, medication and yoga are discussed in regard to how Hindus live their lives and how they believe it can affect life after death. Hindus believe in ‘ashramas’ – the four stages of life every Hindu should go through. The students discuss when they think we enter each stage and what our responsibilities are at each stage, concluding with what they believe are the four important stages of their lives and a description of these. The background and traditions of Diwali are introduced through the story of Rama and Sita which explains why the ‘Festival Of Lights’ is celebrated and why Divas - small clay lamps – are an important part of the celebration. The students discover cultural and religious festivals where light plays an important role and discuss why these similarities have arisen. The students are then given the opportunity to produce a collage or design a card depicting the beauty and wonderful colours of Diwali. Pilgrimages are important across many cultures and religions, and many Hindus will travel to the River Ganges as part of theirs. The legend surrounding the goddess Ganga is told and the effects on the river from the many visitors and industrialisation of India is debated. A range of individual and group activities are incorporated within this booklet, including, gathering research from print, drawing a story board, annotating their thoughts and ideas, drawing graphs, games and peer assessment. This is one of my favourite units with my students as it is predominantly student led which helps build confidence, trust, and responsibility as they work in groups outside of the classroom, independently from the teacher. The unit walks the students through carrying out an investigation around their school breaking down the different components (Introduction, Aim, Hypothesis, Method, Presenting Data, Discussion, Conclusion and Evaluation), explaining the purpose of each, the expected length and giving some sentence starter suggestions. The unit concludes with the student’s peer assessing each other’s group presentations of their investigations. This resource includes the student workbooks, a class PowerPoint presentation and a booklet describing different graphs and their uses which can aid the students in their data presentation. This booklet helps students to understand stereotypes and how they develop. After a short introduction, race and national identity are discussed in terms of the students own and how they consider others, where these perceptions lay or originate and whether they are biological or social. Next, we investigate where we learn our stereotypes from and whether other aspects aside from race and national identity can be stereotyped. Whether or not these are always negative is questioned. Why we stereotype and is there ever an acceptable time to stereotype is explored. Media influence, historical influence and recall and cognitive dissonance theory provide a platform for studying the effect authors, proximity of the reader, use of language and type and magnitude of event have on stereotyping. The booklet concludes in the students writing and producing their own investigation into the closeness of the English and American cultures from introduction, aim and hypothesis, through to discussion, critical reflection, and conclusion. The most endangered tribe in the world live deep in the Amazon rainforest, they are an ancient group of around 400 who carry everything they own; their children, their weapons and their pets. These people are so close to being wiped out forever that they are kept safe, away from the modern world. As a result, very few people have ever met the Awá. These worksheets have the students gather information from a video and use it to explain the plight and rescue of the Awa Tribe.

Here is a chance for your students to get a little creative. In groups they need to use information they have gathered from studying tribes to create their own. A spider diagram is provided to help them include as much information as possible

The Chagga people have lived on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro for hundreds of years, they believe the mountain is holy and treat it with respect. However, since the area was given National Park status in 1970 there has been a sharp increase in hikers. These worksheets have the students imagining they run a local primary school, however the families struggle to afford the uniforms, shoes, books and lunches which result in many children not attending. Their task is to decide how best to use aid money to help try double attendance to the school.

Matmata is a small Berber speaking town in southern Tunisia with a population of about 2,226 who live in traditional underground structures. This type architecture is based on localized needs and construction materials, and reflecting local traditions. It evolves over time to reflect the environmental, cultural, technological and historical content in which it exists. These methods can often be dismissed as crude and unrefined. These worksheets have the students explore the Matmata People’s homes and debate whether having a Star Wars picture filmed at the location would have a positive ro negative affect on their lives.

High in the Andes Mountains of South America live the Quechua tribe. They live by farming potatoes, barley and maize, as well as other crops. They keep cattle, sheep, chickens and…llamas. Llamas are close cousins of camels, minus the hump, and come in very handy for riding and carrying heavy loads. These worksheets have the students explore how llamas and the Quechua Tribes have adapted to their environment and how, with our changing climate, the llamas and Quechue could continue to adapt.
