I am currently a private tutor, prior to this I worked for 20 years as a science teacher. I completed a M.Ed focussing on scientific literacy and the challenges to all students, but particularly those with literacy difficulties at every level of expected attainment. My aim is to offer complete lesson plans, presentations and activities that focus on avoiding cognitive overload in presentations and helping to optimise working memory through carefully paced instructions and modelling.

AQA Triple Science GCSE Revision planner

Each sheet divides the AQA scheme in order to create a revision plan for the whole course over 30-40 sessions. These revision planners have been designed to save time for teachers and be a useful tool for students and parents/carers. Students record confidence levels before and after revision plus the dates on which revision took place. There are two dates for revision in order to encourage re-revision or note when then subject was revised in class or with a tutor or other support person.

Independent and Dependent Variables

This is a full lesson presentation, introducing and applying the key terms independent and dependent variables from definition, to labeling results tables, carrying out practical work and creating a line graph. The idea is to see how these key terms are used throughout any investigative process. It can be used throughout Key Stages 3 and 4.

Atoms, elements and compounds

AQA GCSE Chemistry/Trilogy C1 Atomic Structure and the Periodic Table 1.1.1 Atoms, elements and compounds This lesson builds upon KS3 chemistry definitions of atom, element, compound and molecule as defined by the GCSE specification, but could also be used with more able KS3 classes. Resources – Molecular model student kits (as many as possible). Students will use the lid as their ‘whiteboard’. This lesson could also be completely teacher-led through use of a visualiser. The Powerpoint presentation structured and presented in order to help aid working memory and those with reading difficulties. However I hope it also allows scope for classes to extend their understanding through their own discussions and teacher-led questioning. It builds up to the use of the models to understand the conservation of matter, although this is not stated as such. Notes for the reasoning behind each activity are given with the slides.
