This is a simple but fun activity that will help improve your classes measuring skills. Using a ruler, meter stick, trundle wheel, tape measure, or other measuring tool get your class to measure and record different items in your outdoor space. It can be useful to give clear demonstrations as to how to use the different equipment. This activity can be further differentiated by allowing students to use a variety of equipment as well as asking them to measure to a greater level of accuracy. This coordinate activity pack contains two different sets of activities and is designed to help children master coordinates in a fun and engaging way. One of the activities contains 8 differentiated (4 quadrant and 1 quadrant) worksheets where the children need to crack the code by finding the hidden animal name in the coordinates gird. The space map is a great cross-curricular activity to get children to think about the size of the planets in relation to each other as well as the distances between them. Get children to create a line of planets using the planet sizes table by drawing them on chalk on the playground. If space is limited it is good to do the sun as a whole class due to the massive size! As an extension you can get the children to write in between each planet the distance it is away from the sun as well as any fun facts they can think of or find out. Become a police officer for a day while students use their measuring, division, and number skills to work out how fast cars are going in a chosen area using formulas and conversions. For this activity your class will measure out a stretch of road before timing cars and using formulas to figure out the speed that the car is moving. They will collect a set of results in a table before creating a bar graph to clearly represent their data. After the investigation they will be given some evaluation questions to answer about what they’ve found out. This is a fantastic real-world math investigation for those aspiring police officers!
