A nice resource to break pupils into the autumn term. A five stanza poem about autumn accompanied by a 12 mark reading comprehension. Question areas include: retrieval true or false fact and opinion synonyms word comprehension inference Good for general poetry study or simply as a reading task. Short nature of poem should make the task accessible to most abilities.

The Ghost of Christmas Past - comprehension written in the 1st person by the Ghost of Christmas Past as he explains his role on Christmas Eve - visiting wrongdoers can be a trying business when you’d rather be tucked up by the fire! The Christmas Tree - first person opinion piece written by a rather grumpy Christmas tree who laments on being dragged into his human household for a month every December. Both comprehension come complete with a 15 question comprehension paper and answers for ease of marking. Enjoy.

A good assessment tool that covers much of the arithmetic content from the National Curriculum for Year 5. Can also be used to assess entry level at the beginning of Year 6 and together with the Year 6 assessments can be ideal for showing progress throughout the year. The test is set out in a very similar format to a SAT paper and all answers are included on the same page for ease of marking.
