mock paper Language Paper 1 GCSE AQA

A new GCSE AQA Language Paper 1 mock paper with an extract from Kate Grenville’s The Secret River. Made to look as much like the real AQA paper as possible, with one version in 12pt and a second in 14pt. We gave this as our ‘end of Year 10 exam’ and the results were as expected/similar to other Y10 attainment suggesting that it’s a ‘like for like’ paper. Students said they liked it. We will continue to use this paper in my dept.

Language Paper 1 How to Answer Each Question

Slides to walk your class through each question on the Tiredness of Rosabel (AQA Lang Paper 1 2017) paper. Lots of tips, how tos, sentence stems, with details about how the marks are awarded and examples with activities to do along the way. Takes about 2 - 3 lessons to get through. I usually do this at the end of a short story unit and then give them an in class Section A to try on their own.

AQA Language Paper 2 Section A walk through

Topic - tattoos Non-fiction articles (contemporary and 19th C) and slides to walk students through Section A of the paper. Opportunities to practise with sentence stems, model paragraphs and clear instructions how to answer each question. 2 - 3 hours worth of teaching/work. I was observed teaching this and the obs went very well - high student engagement despite it being a dry paper and clear instructions.

A Christmas Carol Stave 1

Slides to take students through reading Stave 1. Including some ‘intro to Dickens’ and ‘strategies for reading 19th C’ and charity advert analysis. Lots of differentiated tasks and opportunities for think, pair, share student talk and role play. There is a non-fiction reading worksheet with comprehension questions that can be used as a homework. I have made these to support a non specialist cover teacher and for students at home isolating so have made them as clear, accessible and easy to use as possible. You could load these up and walk through it without much understanding of ACC and still have a decent lesson! There is a cloze worksheet to summarise the Stave after working through the slides.

Knowledge Organiser for Novel - Now Is The Time For Running

I created this for the Michael Williams novel Now Is The Time For Running to use with Year 8. Use the knowledge organiser for sharing the learning journey, supporting students with weaker literacy and for setting homework. Also good for communication with parents about content. We also used this KI as a model in whole school CPD on Knowledge Organisers.

AQA English Literature Paper 2 Unseen Poetry sample paper using Simon Armitage

(0)
This is a sample Unseen Poetry paper that I made for my top set Year 11. I chose two poems by Simon Armitage and tried to use the wording on the AQA Specimen papers for Literature Paper 2 in my questions. The poems are I Am Very Bothered and Unnamed poem. Please note the second poem deals with the theme of domestic violence and will need to be used with caution depending on who is in your group. Note this Unseen Poetry paper includes two unseen poems and two questions. The first question is worth 24 marks and the second (comparing two unseen poems) is worth 8 marks. This is different to previous Unseen Poetry papers where students had only 1 poem and 1 question to answer. I have written model answers for each question and provided snippets of the AQA mark scheme for students to annotate and mark. This would be useful to use in class before a mock exam or set as a homework task.

International Women's Day Non Fiction Lesson reading Marie Colvin

Here is a one off lesson I made for the department to celebrate and recognise International Women’s Day. Non fiction reading skills and some vocabulary building, plus some note taking opportunities and ‘synthesising’ / summary skills linked to Lang Paper 2. Also can be linked to War Photographer Carol Ann Duffy.
