Children of the Coast and Forest Programme of Study This is a self-contained project-based programme of study. Each of the three workbooks has 4 units and each unit is designed to be taught in 1-2 hours. It is drawn from the KS2 National Curriculum but is easily adaptable for a KS3 or older audience. It has a deliberate emphasis on EDI (equality, diversity and inclusion) and reflects a passion and interest in the history, culture and natural resources of Ghana. All three units are based on extracts from an, as yet unpublished book called Children of the Coast and Forest. It is about two 10-year-old girls on the Gold Coast in the 1850s. One is the daughter of the British Governor and the other is the daughter of a Fante merchant. Each workbook contains a reading and comprehension activity and a research and presenting activity. In addition: Workbook 1 Focuses on the role of Cape Coast Castle in the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Activities include analysing text, evaluating sources and an element of creative writing. **Workbook 2 ** Focuses on the relationship between the Fante and the British in the Gold Coast in the Nineteenth Century. It gives biographical detail about famous historical Fante people and their contemporary descendants. Activities include researching Fante history and culture and the opportunity to design and make an Asafo flag. Workbook 3 Focuses on the development and military strength of the Ashanti Empire in the Nineteenth Century. It gives historical detail about the Ashanti Empire and the Anglo-Ashanti Wars. This unit also looks at the contemporary gold extraction in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. Pupils look at sources, carry out research and are encouraged to develop an informed opinion on the advantages and disadvantages of gold extraction and processing to local African populations. KS2 English (upper secondary) Reading: Word Reading Writing Comprehension Writing Composition KS2 Computing Select, use and combine a variety of software (including internet services) on a range of digital devices to design and create content that accomplish given goals, including analysing, evaluating and presenting information. KS2 History A study of an aspect or theme in British history that extends pupils’ chronological knowledge beyond 1066 (British Empire in west Africa) A non-European society that provides contrasts with British history (Ashanti Empire) KS2 Geography human geography: economic activity including trade links, and the distribution of natural resources including minerals. KS2 Citizenship. Developing good relationships and respecting the differences between people to try to see things from their points of view; to think about the lives of people living in other places and times. Prepare to play an active role as citizens: that resources can be allocated in different ways and that these economic choices affect individuals, communities, and the sustainability of the environment.
