The British Empire in Colour - Ep3 - Legacy - Worksheet to support the documentary
Worksheet written to support the TV documentary. The worksheet contains a variety of information gathering activities and higher order tasks.
The coronation of Elizabeth II herald a new era, as the old Empire becomes the new multi-cultural Commonwealth. As emigrants flee the hardship of post-war Britain, tempted by the promise of Australian and Canadian riches, West Indian immigrants flood into Britain. The 1960s herald a time of changing racial attitudes and while Britain adjusts to its growing multicultural society, her dominions - Australia and Canada - strive for a new understanding with their own unhappy indigenous populations. In Rhodesia, the last painful pangs of the Empire are felt, as white and black nationalisms clash. In a rapidly changing world, the peoples of the former British Empire begin to realise the legacy of their imperial heritage.

The full range of placemats for the Medicine Through Time course include:

These interactive learning placemats were designed to meet the challenges of the new 9-1 GCSE. They build upon the successful Medicine Through Time Placemats that I previously designed (and which received 5* reviews by all who have purchased them up to the time of launching these new materials – see: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/9-1-edexcel-gcse-history-of-medicine-place-mat-question-structure-11627611 ). The new placemats have been identified as best practice during a ‘Challenge Partners’ review as well as being identified as best practice by other History teachers on the Olevi ‘Outstanding Teacher Programme’.
The new design learning placemats support both teachers and students in addressing the:
a) dramatic increase in the curriculum content needed for the different units
b) support the need for increased literacy demands
c) help students become familiar and more confident in recognising the correct response needed for the unprecedented number of different question styles
The placemats are designed to be double sided. One side focuses on the CONTENT: providing an overview of key knowledge and understanding needed (this will change for each topic area within this GCSE unit).
Every placemat across the GCSE range is designed to encourage greater understanding of:
1. Historical Context - through timelines, picture prompts and key words
2. Awareness of the ‘big picture’ so students can see how individual lessons fit into the unit and make clearer links between prior and future learning – through ‘Big Picture’ questions.
3. Better Literacy – through selected ‘language for learning’ vocab box.
4. Memory prompts to support revision – through the use of carefully selected images.
5. Increased awareness of metacognition – through PME (Progress, Monitor and Evaluation Time) questions to encourage students to deconstruct their learning and identify key factors (eg. Social, economic, political) or key individuals and make links between features. A pictorial metacognition man with 5 question prompts will support student reflection.
6. A confidence thermometer is also included as a prompt to identify student confidence in the topic.
The reverse side contains guidance on EXAM TECHNIQUE through:
1. Identifying the nature of the question styles for each GCSE Unit and the allocated marks available
2. Examiners levelled mark schemes
3. Support writing frames with generic sentence starters

BBC - Lucy Worsley Investigates - The Princes in The Tower
What really happened to the princes in the tower? Lucy Worsley uncovers the story of the two boys, whose disappearance in 1483 has led to centuries of mystery and speculation.
The two princes, Edward and Richard, lived during the Wars of the Roses, a decades-long fight over the English throne between the house of Lancaster and the house of York. Edward IV, the boys’ father, was the first Yorkist King. His eldest son, Edward, was destined to inherit the throne - and this fact entirely shaped his young life.
Edward was just 12 when his father King Edward IV died, and his age meant he wasn’t considered ready to rule. Edward IV had appointed his brother Richard to be the young King’s protector, but not everyone was happy with this arrangement. What followed was a tussle for control between Richard and the Queen’s family, the Woodvilles.
The princes were taken to the Tower of London ‘for their own protection’, but when a priest declared the boys illegitimate and Richard next in line to the throne, Richard was crowned King.
The gaps in the historical record have fuelled 500 years of speculation, so Lucy speaks to Tim Thornton, Professor of History at the University of Huddersfield, who has found evidence of one account of what happened written by Thomas More; and Matthew Lewis, Chair of the Richard III Society for his views on the events.
The enduring story of the Princes in the Tower not only reveals fascinating insights about childhood, and the nature of politics and power in mediaeval England, but how the interpretations of events are never fixed, with new evidence ensuring this story continues to fascinate.

The Birth of Empire - The East India Company Episode 2 Worksheet to support the BBC Documentary presented by Dan Snow. Written to support the Edexcel A level: Gaining and Losing an Empire -1763-1914
By 1800 the East India Company had grown from a tiny band of merchants into a colossal trading empire. But scandal and corruption in the 18th century had led to a curtailment of its powers by the British government. The state now controlled the company’s affairs in India and, throughout the 19th century, would chip away at its remaining powers and trading privileges.
The company was transformed from a trading enterprise into the rulers of India, and governed vast swathes of the subcontinent on behalf of the British Crown. Its territory expanded enormously and an empire was born.
As the company traded opium to a reluctant Chinese Empire, in India a dangerous chasm opened up between the British rulers and the Indian people. Alienated and disaffected, significant numbers of the company’s massive army of Indian soldiers finally revolted and the Company’s handling of the mutiny was its final undoing. In 1858 British India passed into Queen Victoria’s hands and the Raj was born.

Lucy Worsely - Six Wives - Ep.1 - Divorced - Supporting Worksheet

Historian Lucy Worsley time travels back to the Tudor Court to witness some of the most dramatic moments in the lives of Henry VIII’s six wives. This episode follows the emotional and physical struggles of Katherine of Aragon as she strove to give Henry the male heir he so desired. As Henry’s eye wandered over the women at court, Anne Boleyn, not wishing to be cast aside as her sister Mary had been, repeatedly rejected the king’s advances and insisted on marriage.

BBC Horrible Histories Season 6 'Orrible Oliver Cromwell Special
A special episode of the historical sketch show about Oliver Cromwell. We follow Oliver as he rises from obscurity, challenges King Charles I in the English Civil War, and ultimately orders the King’s execution - as he says, a it was a ‘cruel necessity’.
