I am an English teacher in South Africa at an independent school. We create our own resources as we have a lot of autonomy about what we teach. I will try to share what I think might be fun or useful when I can and would really appreciate reviews telling me how I can improve what I put up. Thanks!

This PowerPoint revises Chapters 1 - 5 without referring to the swear words. It is a useful point to recap before his exile as Byron was when his scandal hit. The themes are very mature, and we teach this book to 17 year olds in South Africa, but for everywhere else, please read it first as it deals with very adult themes.

This resource aims to give the students an opportunity to consider success and complacency because the protagonist is very complacent and lacks ambition. It looks at death too, so if a student has suffered a loss, please be sensitive to how they might be feeling. I've also included a link to a TED video so where the author speaks about this personally.

Background, Characters and Shot/Plot Analysis - over 50 slides. I use this with Grade 11s after watching the film, and discussing the following: Disparity in South Africa. Whether a white author can speak about the township experience. The auteur and his/her role in reinterpreting books for screen adaption. How often is this to make funding more accessible? Redemption.

Start with this Spark that I created to explore the novel: [https://spark.adobe.com/page/0WWBYLuathIX7/] Thereafter, use the PPT in presenter view so that you can discuss each shot with your students as my notes are available to the presenter there, but not to the students - they must make their own notes based on the discussion that arises from the slides. The shots cover the entire movie, so you can use this PPT to take shots and use them in tests. If you have any comments or insights I would love to hear them - thank you!

The Last Runaway Resources Chp 1-6 plus characters, themes and symbols

We read “The Last Runaway” by Tracey Chevalier with our Grade 11 class. It is a book that explores the experience of runaway slaves and the Quaker community in Ohio that was on the Underground Railroad route, and which the slaves would use to travel to freedom in Canada. Many people helped the slaves along the way, at great personal risk, and this books look at the tension between following one’s conscience, and following the law, as well as the tragic experience of slaves as they risked everything for freedom.

Film study of the evolution of the superhero from Superman (1978) to the recent Black Panther film. I suggest you also use storyboards, articles and reviews to explore this and other superhero films.
