Animal-themed games and quizzes for young ESL/EAL students

4 Resources
Best suited to young learners (4-11?) studying English as a Foreign Language, these short activities are designed to revise animal words in a fun and engaging way. I orginally used these resources in 1:1 private classes with learners at pre-A1 and A1 level of the CEFR, working with the Cambridge Starters and Movers curriculums. My students enjoyed these resources and I hope yours will too! All images are copyright-free so can be used anywhere.

Think of an animal

(1)
An activity for young learners to practice animals, basic adjectives and verbs. Originally a practice activity based on the YLE Movers ESL curriculum. Best suited for older children (6-11) studying ESL/EAL. Learners have to think of an animal that fits the description, for example an animal that can fly or that lives on a farm. The teacher elicits responses and shows examples in the form of images that appear on the slides. The examples chosen reflect the vocabulary in Cambridge YLE Movers. The descriptions used are designed to recycle basic adjectives and verbs.

Learners are given a prompt and must name a relevant fruit or vegetable. The question prompts are designed to revise colours and numbers. The teacher can elicit answers before revealing the suggested answers as animations on the slides. Other options are possible so there may be other correct answers to elicit. The pictures are fun, cute and copyright-free. Would suit young learners at pre-A1 to A1 level of the CEFR.

Originally used for learners working on the Cambridge YLE Starters curriculum.
