For this edition of 2021 Black History Months ‘Proud to be’ theme we have developed a resource based around Marcus Garvey, the father of Pan-Africanism. It is based around his 1921 speech “If You Believe the Negro Has a Soul”. Please read the speech before deploying the resource to your learners to assess suitability. There may be some archaic terms that some may find offensive / inappropriate. This was designed with GCSE students in mind, but may be suitable for KS3 Students. It consists of a short interview he did with GQ magazine shortly after the viral speech he gave at a anti-racism event in London in the wake of the death of George Floyd, followed by a series of discussion points and extended writing activities. The next in our proud to be series for 2021’s black history month theme. In this edition we look at Marcus Rashford. It starts with a quick video interview with him on the Black History Month inspired football boots he released in conjunction with Nike last year, followed up with some discussion points for you and the group to explore and some extended writing activities. A Complete lesson covering Black Pound Day UK. Includes a powerpoint presentation detailing what it is, why it has come about, its aims, how it helps black communities, why it is important and how to support BPD and what we can do to help. Suitable for GCSE and Key Stage 3 Students, athough could easily be modified for KS2. Also attached is a set of activities which can be done individually or in groups. In this KS2 English edition of our Proud to be series for Black History Month 2021, we are looking at Black British Sporting Heroes. Designed for Key Stage 2. Inside is a video covering many of the most successful and widely recognised black British athletes, Quick questions (answers at the back) discussion points for your group and extended writing activities. In this Key Stage 2 Lesson we examine the Black Poppy Rose, a symbol designed to recognise the contributions of African, Black, West Indian, Pacific Island and Indigenous communities to wars that date back to the 16th century. Attached is a short video from the founder, Selena Carty, followed by some questions and discussion points for your and your group, and extended writing exercises for your students to work on afterwards. I’ve also attached a blank poppy template for your students to have a go at designing their own poppy or having a go and drawing the Black Poppy Rose. We also have a GCSE lesson on the Black Poppy Rose which goes into more detail and contains a longer interview with Selena Carty, of part of a lecture she delivered at SOAS (School of Oriental & African Studies) University. In this edition of our Proud to be series for Black History Month 2021, we are looking at Dwayne Johnson, the wrestler and hollywood actor more commonly known as The Rock! For KS3 and KS2. There is a video (approx 20 minutes), followed by some English comprehension questions for your students to work on based on the content they just saw. We start with some quick short answer questions (answers included on the final page), followed by some discussion points for you to go through with your group.
