OCR Biology A : Year 12 Meiosis

Here is a collection of resources to teach meiosis to Year 12, which will span two lessons. A booklet that matches the presentation, with OCR past questions, a matching powerpoint that contains video hyperlinks and a card sort/cut and stick activity. There is also a definitions sheet, which I have also used as a page in the booklet. You can use pipecleaners/straws or plasticine for the activity on the ppt. The cut and stick i got from TES last year, but everything else I have put together myself. The photos of frogs, flowers and straws(!) are my own.

How Science Works

A series of definitions that students have to know for HSW and associated coursework ISAs etc Possible uses: 1. Print out the individual slides, laminate and put on display around the lab. 2. Print out slides as a handout to give to puplis for reference. 3. Print out or display some or all of the slides without the headings, and get pupils to work out what the definition is for, could be a quick test or starter/plenary.

AQA A level Biology Required Practical 5: Broad Bean Plant Dissection

An alternative to a heart dissection. I put together this worksheet for my sixth form because one or two didn't want to do the heart. We use iPads, so there is reference to taking photos and putting into ibooks, but it might help with ideas. I planted the broad bean seeds during the easter holiday and I was able to use them for this practical 24 days later, when they were a suitable size. The stain used for the TS Stem and Root, Toluidine, is the same as AQA recommends for the Mitosis practical. Stand the plant in the Eosin for about 2 hours before the practical, although if you leave it overnight as I say on the worksheet, it works very well, but isn't essential. Pupils were able to cut quite thin sections of Stem and Root successfully using basic apparatus.

Here you will find two resources, a word document which can be duplicated into a workbook for the students, including a revision checklist on the first page. Resources mentioned are specific to our school, but the document is editable. The second is a 'matching' smartboard, with diagrams, answers video clips etc.

AQA GCSE B1b: Lichens-Pollution Indicator Species

Here I have a Powerpoint to introduce Lichens as pollution indicator species. Photographs that can be laminated incase you can't find any suitable ones to bring in to school. Worksheet I modified from one I found somewhere on the internet! This takes a good whole lesson and a homework. As it is, it is suitable for HT but could be adapted to suit. Enjoy!
