This very exhaustive and detailed guide contains a lot of information and activities to help Spanish A Level students research reflect about Guillermo del Toro’s film El laberinto del fauno. There are a variety of reading, writing and speaking (role plays) activities, as well as multitude of quotes and shots from the film to support each topic. The booklet consists of 84 pages, and it is divided into the following sections: Introduction - a brief reading activity and a vocabulary section, and a series of warm-up activities to complete before, while and after watching the film, including an analysis of the film’s introduction, a “who said it” activity, short written questions to reflect on key scenes and a guided writing activity to help the students write a review of the film. Characters: reading, speaking and writing activities to explore the different characters and characterisation techniques used in the film. The director’s techniques: the use of allegory, the elements of the fairy tale, the use of colour and the use of different shots and camera angles (camera work). Historical background: four sections to study the historical background against which the film is set: the Civil War, a section about “las dos Españas” and how this concept is reflected in the film, a section about “los del monte” and a section about fascism. The main themes in El laberinto: obedience, masculinity and femininity and the treatment of violence. A final section with further aspects of the film for the students to research, including influence of other directors, the influence of Goya’s Black Paintings, the importance of insects in del Toro’s film and the similarities and differences between Pan’s Labyrinth and The Devil’s Backbone. This booklet contains twenty four questions that follow the format of the 90-word questions in the new Spanish GCSE writing exam. They cover all three themes of the AQA specification, but can be easily adapted to other exam boards. There are eight questions for each theme, and they can be used in lessons, but also as an easy way to set useful homework activities for the students. All questions include four bullet points that the students are prompted to cover, and they explicitly require them to include references to three time frames and opinions (as per the AQA mark scheme). When possible, one of the bullet points starts with ‘qué hiciste’, a question which appears in many of the AQA samples and that some students often fail to understand. The cards contain (quite a lot) of factual information about the theme (a lot more than the sample cards from AQA) and three questions, the first one always being “How do you react to the information on this card?” or similar). The aim of presenting the cards like this is to provide the students with a lot of ideas on what to say about the theme, as well as making them more aware that they always have to discuss the information printed on the card (AO2 and AO4). There are eighteen cards for each theme (six cards for each sub theme), and each section is followed by a minimum of 20 questions to encourage the students to explore and discuss the topic further. The booklet ends with a list of vocabulary useful for the speaking test, and it also includes an overview of the A Level course, of Paper 3 and of the assessment criteria. Two practice writing papers (one foundation, one higher) following the format of the new GCSE writing exam, and focusing on the topics covered in Theme 2. The foundation paper includes four questions (describe the photo, 40 words question, translation and 90 words question) and the higher paper includes three (90 words question, 150 words question and translation). I have also included two feedback sheets (one foundation, one higher) that include"check-lists" (based on the AQA mark scheme for writing) to provide quick, personalised feedback for each of the questions. A very comprehensive set of resources to study the topic of festivals in Spain. The presentation (25 slides) includes reading and writing activities, two role plays, six photo cards and two translations (Spanish into English and English into Spanish). The set also includes 6 worksheets that complement the presentation. Finally, there is a grammar activity that focuses on the use of impersonal verbs (“se” + he/she form of the verb) and the conditional.
