EDUQAS Practice Paper: Area of Study C – Musical Theatre (Wicked and Sweeney Todd)

This resource was made to support the new Eduqas GCE A level specification, first exam June 2018 (Area of Study C: Question 2). The first listening question (part 1) is Defying Gravity from Wicked by Schoenberg and the second part involves comparing this extract with A little Priest from Sweeny Todd by Sondheim. The resource consists of three parts: two recordings, student question paper and a marking scheme. It is also a useful unfamiliar listening resource for other specifications with a Musical Theatre option (i.e. AQA).

This resource consists of six power points with annotated score and embedded audio extracts for each slide. The focus is on how the music elements are used in the Purcell set work, ‘Music for a While’. You will acquire the necessary subject specific terminology using the acronym R SMITH (Rhythm, Tempo and Metre - Structure - Melody - Instrumentation/Use of Technology - Texture - Harmony and Tonality) and the elements are dealt with one at a time (i.e. one element per power point). The score is annotated and because each slide has an accompanying audio, the aspect of the element being discussed can be instantly heard in action. Really helpful for delivery by a teacher, but also designed for my online course enabling independent study. www.medmusicservices.com

This resource was made to support the new Eduqas GCE A level specification, first exam June 2018. The resource consists of three parts: a recording, student question paper and a marking scheme. Students will require a blank score (NB allowed in the exam). The final 5 marker question is related to the movement’s structure and tonality. The mark scheme is detailed providing an overview of Debussy’s use of these two elements. i.e. ‘This work illustrated Debussy’s desire to break away from both the standard harmonies and rigid formal types of earlier music. Outline any interesting or unusual features in this movement’s structure and tonality’.

This resource consists of six power points with annotated score and embedded audio extracts for each slide. The focus is on how the music elements are used in the set work, ‘Pathetique Sonata’ by Beethoven. Dynamics and Instrumentation Rhythm, Tempo and Metre Structure Melody Texture Harmony and Tonality I tend to use the acronym DR SMITH for my study guides although went a little out of order for this particular set work as I felt the instrumentation, structure and basically navigating your way through the various loops was helpful. The score is annotated and because each slide has an accompanying audio, the aspect of the element being discussed can be instantly heard in action. Really helpful for delivery by a teacher, but also designed for my online course enabling independent study. If you have any problems with this resource please contact me. They were created on a MacBook Pro using Keynote and have been converted for use on a PC as a power point. You may want the Keynote versions, so just let me know. www.medmusicservices.com
