Mini Reading Comprehensions - The Wind in the Willows

(0)
This has been designed for Year 6 and includes 5 mini comprehensions with short extracts from The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame. Each Comprehension fits on a single side of A4 paper and has 4/5 questions. These ‘higher level’ comprehensions require the children to… …use inference and deduction …back up what they are saying using quotes …answer ‘find the word’ or ‘find the group of words’ questions …identify why the writer has written something in a particular way There are absolutely no basic recall questions! The Band Project

This has been designed for Upper KS2 or KS3 and would be perfect for the end of year (perhaps after testing) and the children really enjoy it. The basic idea is that the children take an existing song and change the lyrics. They then sing it to the karaoke version of the song which can easily be obtained from YouTube. This project guides them through the whole process. Sound of Music Activities

Sound of Music Activities

It might be over 50 years old, but this film truly has something for everyone. It is also very useful to look at what people are really thinking which can feed into their writing. This resource includes 32 activities / points for discussion (including 6 writing activities) for the first 1 hour and 45 minutes of the film. I would not suggest that you use all of them, but choose the ones you like the most. I would also suggest that after the Intermission the children should just watch the last hour or so of the film uninterrupted. I have not included any activities for the last part of the film. The times of relevant scenes are included throughout this resource so you can locate them easily. You could easily use this as a basis of your literacy for a week - perhaps more. INCLUDES FREE A REAL MYSTERIES PROJECT: THE MYSTERIOUS TIME TRAVELLER. THIS FIVE PAGE WRITING PROJECT IS BASED ON A REAL EVENT - ALTHOUGH THE CHILDREN DON’T FIND THIS OUT UNTIL THE END. Visit www.davlae.co.uk for free teaching resources.

Out of the Ashes by Michael Morpurgo Reading Journal

(0)
This journal has 24 questions that focus on using inference and deduction rather than basic recall. If you double side the four pages, it will fold to create an A5 booklet in the right order. I avoided asking questions after the point in the story when the family have discovered that the disease is on their farm. The idea is that the children read the last few chapters uninterrupted and then explain briefly on the final page how the story ended. Visit www.davlae.co.uk for free teaching resources.
