The best way for young children to understand numbers is for them to ‘play with maths’. This means using lots of concrete resources until they have a true understanding of our number system. Without this vital step, children will not be able to visualise maths and therefore will struggle later on when dealing with abstract maths. The next step is for children to use what they have learnt with picturial representations. This still enables them to visualise the maths without being able to ‘play with it’. This powerpoint will fit within the pictorial element of the process. Saying that, it is also a lot of fun for children to play the games and experience Ten Frames in a different way. Children are expected to click on the number (out of four options) that matches the addition sentence shown. The powerpoint shows them if they are right or wrong.

Reading is a ‘silent’ process for many children. When first learning they do not possess the ability to imagine what the written word is telling us. They have many, many other skills they have to master before they can get there. This resource is aimed at beginner readers to try and put some fun into reading and creating words. The picture cards are double should be double backed so they have a picture on one side that they can make a word to match it or they have the actual word they can copy. With a picture to help young children visualise what they are reading, they have a purpose to reading it too and not just going through the motions. This resource is designed to be used independently, but can obviously be used as a teaching aid too. There is something you will have to add to this resource - lots of bottle tops with graphemes on. This resource is for beginner readers so it will only need phase 2 sounds on the bottle tops. Once that is done (and you will see from my picture that I tend to have the vowels as a different colour because this helps with middle sound work later on), the child can then flick the correct bottle tops/sounds into the goal to score and make the CVC words.

Children need a stimulus when writing. When a child is beginning to learn to write, it is even more important. To a child at the very early stages of reading or writing see letters and words as empty and lifeless. An competent reader can see words using their imagination and a sentence can create a thousand pictures in your mind. As educators we need to help children reach this level of enjoyment through the written word. To help children on the beginning of their journey, sentence starters are a great aid. Not only do they need help with creating sentences with sentence starters but they need help with the imagination to create pictures in their minds with these sentences. Each sentence starter has a picture to match with the sentence. I have not included capital letters with the sentence starters unless they are similar to the lower case version, because I intended on using them for very early writers and I wouldn’t have taught them how to form capital letters let alone read and understand words with them. If you laminate the resource, they can use over and over again.

It is important for young children to have reading material that they can use and read. This booklet is designed for young children to read independently. With this in mind I have not used Capital letters unless they look like the lower case version. The sentences used are very simple and repetitive, Starting with ‘She can …’ . With adult support this booklet can be used to talk about right from wrong. Each picture and sentence has a smiley face and a sad face so you can talk to your child about good decisions and bad ones. Is she bad? To use the resource, I printed it all out, then laminated it before making it into a booklet.

I created all these resources to be used in my class when they start in reception. The idea behind this resource is to help children understand what they are reading. A simple comprehension activity. There is a simple sentence that will match to one of the three pictures on the cards. The child should use a peg and match them. The peg will help their fine motor skills which in turn will help when they are ready to write. Please note that I have NOT included capital letters on these sentences, the idea behind this is that the children aimed at with these resources are only starting on their phonics journey and will probably not have the skills to recognise all the letters let alone capital letters.

I created all these resources to be used in my class when they start in reception. The idea behind this resource is to allow the child to make words that match the picture. You will need extra resources to go along side this printable - I have used bottle tops where I wrote on the letter sounds to match. To start with, the child can have the three letters to match the picture and try and put them in order. Once they are competent in hearing initial sounds, middle sounds and end sounds then I would just place the cards and bottle tops altogether and they have to fine the correct sounds to match the picture.

I created all these resources to be used in my class when they start in reception. The idea behind this resource is to help with hearing the initial sound of words. This is a very important initial skill for children to possess in order for them to work with full words. The initial sound is on the sheet and if the child is not sure what it reads then will need help. Then I would get them to name each picture before placing a peg on the picture that has the initial sound noted down.

Adapted from ‘Little Rabbit Foo Foo’ book, this story is about the Naughty little Joker scooping up boys and girls and bopping them on the head. They are saved by Batman as he flies down and eventually puts him in jail. I made a smart notebook presentation, using GIFs to help tell the story. My reception class have loved it so I thought I would share it. This started off my talk for writing topic this year. We talked about where they had heard the rhythm of the story before (Little Rabbit Foo Foo is a firm favourite of ours) and then how I had changed the story. We then learnt the story for them to retell to me at the end of the week.

This story has been adapted from the much loved ‘We’re going on a bear hunt’ and I’ve used it to start out Talk for writing unit about superheros. I only used two baddies in the version as I teach in Early Years but we then used the idea to create their own version using different baddies they chose. We talked about how I changed it from the bear hunt and how they can change it with me modelling during the week and then them having a go on Friday. The story is made using GIFs and the text underneath. I found all my children were excited about the story and we had some lovely roleplaying all through the unit. All good when you want those sort of observations.

I created all these resources to be used in my class when they start in reception. The idea behind this resource is to allow the child to make the word that matches the picture and all the resources needed to do so are there to hand. The resource has all three letters to make the CVC word attached using a split pin and the child can move these around to make different combinations of the letters, hopefully they will be able to hear the initial sound, middle sound and end sound to the word and therefore be able to place them in the correct order.

This resource is exactly the same as the one you can print off and use pegs to indicate which picture matches the sentences, but it is for use on the interactive whiteboard. Again, children can access this independently as it does say when you have the wrong answer or it can be used to model the printed version. All they need to do is click on the correct bottle top to indicate which letter comes next in the CVC word.

This powerpoint is designed to be used independently, but can obviously be used as a teaching aid too. I made a lot of resources for traditional tales that can be printed off and laminated. Make shape pictures using 5 shapes. One shape is revealed at a time, so over five slides the picture takes shape. When teaching this I get the children to tell you about the shapes they see - “I think its a square because I see four sides that are all the same length.” This way they are talking about the name of the shape and matching it to its properties. I usually show the first slide on Monday, then the first and second on Tuesday, then the first, second and third on Wednesday etc. It builds up the anticipation of what it will reveal by the end of the week but also revisits the shapes of the previous days so you can ask someone who maybe wasn’t so sure the first time! They enjoy guessing what the picture will make in the end. There are 32 powerpoints in total, each with a unique picture.

Numicon is such a great resource. It helps young children to visualise numbers in an efficient way. This can easily be linked to Ten Frame learning too. The resources included in this bundle are: Matching Numicon to number wheels for numbers 1-5 (I use pegs for this resource that I have drawn on the numbers. The children then place the peg on the correct Numicon.) Good for fine motor and number recognition. There are two copies of this, one with a Numicon representation and the other with a Ten Frame. I laminated them back to back. Same as above but with numbers 1-10. Matching Numicon to number boards. They have pictures of the Numicon with three different numbers next to it. The children should place a peg on the correct number. Again, good for fine motor and number recognition. This resource goes upto 20. A visual display of Numicon with the number next to them. They are for numbers 1-10 to display in the classroom. They are on a yellow background so they stand out very well.

When young children learn new concepts, it is vital that they use real objects in order to ‘play with the maths’ and this will be able them to visualise it once they are familiar with the new concepts. These resources created will compliment this work using pictorial resources in a combination of ways. Half of these contain a peg board format, which means the child has to place a peg on the right answer. This helps with fine motor skills, which in turn will aid mark making skills. The bonus here is an A3 version of the addition stories, where children can use objects of their own to create a story like shown in the examples.

This resource is for the children to use. The idea was that it would form a part of a display low down so they could access it. In my head it was for initial sounds work as there are words/pictures that are not CVC words on the spinners but I have tried to include as many CVC words as I could so if they are ready to read the words then they can have a go. The resource itself is basically two circles that you split pin together. If you cut the triangle out from the second circle it will allow you to see one of the triangle sections of the first. The split pin allows children to move it around so they can see one picture and associated word with it. It also shows capital letter form and lower case form of each letter.

A very simple comprehension activity for children who are just learning to read. Each board has a picture and three words. The child should use a peg to place on top of the correct word that matches the picture. This way, they are reading lots (each word rhyme to help the child read them all) and the peg helps their fine motor skills too, which in turn helps with writing.
