This is a three lesson series on rhythm and pulse. Students will learn to comprehend rhythm using dots and boxes which will then be converted into using musical notes. For their final assessment, students compose a 4 bar phrase in 4/4 time signature. All worksheets and reflection sheets are included in the PowerPoints.

Morse Code Music Worksheet - KS3 This worsheet accompanies the Graphic score sequence of learning. Students must spell out their names using the dots and dashes of the morse code key. They must then complete the key, making a sound for a dot and dash (eg. clap on a dot and snap on a dash). Students must then perform their names to each other in a pair.

Beginner Music Theory Scheme of Work This is the fourth two lessons in the Beginner Music Theory Scheme of Work. This scheme of works focuses on giving students the tools necessary to pass a Trinity Grade 1 Music Theory Exam. The course is set over a seven week period with two lessons per week but these could easily be combined. I created this scheme as a remote learning resource for Year 9 students but could be used with any year in KS3 or KS4. Each lesson has a series of slides that explain the focus for the lesson then tasks that help to develop students understanding about the topic. The last week focuses on completing a Grade 1 Music Theory past paper to test students knowledge. This resource could be used as a remote learning scheme, homework tasks or even as an extra curricular activity run by a teacher. The slides and activities are exciting to look at and informative, allowing students to have full engagement with the material.

Rhythm and Pulse: Dots and Boxes (Lesson 1 of 2) This lesson looks at how to read notation and rhythms using dots and boxes using the words tea, coffee and soup. Students interpret when to clap using the dots in the boxes and when to rest using blank boxes. We then build on this using the word coffee to interpret quaver beats and soup to interpret minim notes. Students then do a group performance using polyrhythms in four parts.

Topic: Rhythm and Pulse Suitable for: KS2 and KS3 This is the updated sequence of learning for the topic Rhythm and Pulse. The original version is still available in my shop. This lesson is the first in a sequence of six where students learn about Rhythm and Pulse. In this lesson, students will learn the definition of the words rhythm and pulse and try to clap a basic rhythm using dots in boxes. Students will also compose their own rhythm and watch a video of the musicians ‘STOMP’ to understand how polyrhythms are used to make music.
