Often found in 11+exam papers, otherwise straightforward four-rules number crunches will be ‘shuffled’ to test the candidate’s depth of understanding. These questions also provide reinforcement of times table recall.

In the 11+ papers even very able candidates will fall short if they can’t use speed strategies. Knowledge and familiarity with divisibility rules for x10, 5, 2, 3, 6, 9 and 4 are essential. These questions, in Word or PDF, test the rules that incorporate using the sum of the digits.

Modern Greek listening practice: intermediate level

Effective listening practice is the key to achieving fluency in a foreign language. This Ppt. presentation ‘explodes’ authentic Greek conversations into accessible ‘sound bites’, each with an on-click transcript and a further on-click translation. Practise writing skills by typing in what you hear and check it against the transcript (this feature doesn’t function on Mac). The conversations are from the excellent Easy Greek street videos, free on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=easygreek. You can also get a full transcript and translation, as well as accompanying exercises, direct from Easy Greek; details are on the first slide of the Ppt. and under each video on YouTube. I would really appreciate feedback on this; it’s time-consuming to produce, but if effective it’s worth doing some more.

Place Value PowerPoint KS2

These are PowerPoint whole class/group activities to develop and reinforce understanding of, and mental dexterity with, place value and larger numbers. The first is to check basic grasp of HTU. The second deliberately bypasses consideration of ‘thousands’ as the next column after units, tens and hundreds, and moves instead to the more logical step: HTU of thousands. Follow-up 6 digit and 9 digit resource packs will shortly be available to purchase.

Modern Greek Listening Practice with 'Listen & Repeat'

Practise listening, pronunciation, vocabulary and sentence construction with ‘Listen and Repeat’ using some of the best material available on the internet for learning Greek. The Ppt presentation has audio, transcript and translation in bite-size units that can be activated and repeated at your own speed. The portable MP3 audio file has built-in pauses to repeat the phrases, and there is PDF transcript and translation. Links to the source material are provided with each unit, and further material such as vocabulary and grammar exercises can often be found there. The level of this unit is lower intermediate. Further units will span the intermediate levels. If you choose to download this resource, I would be very grateful for constructive feedback. I feel very strongly that ‘Listen and Repeat’ is the most powerful tool to develop foreign language skills, especially for people who find languages particularly daunting, and I hope to encourage the production of more material of this type from the language teaching community.
