The Reading Cannon is designed to be enjoyable and offers a range of independent reading, teacher modelling and small group reading opportunities in each lesson. Students should read a chapter and then answer the comprehension questions for that chapter- the questions are not analytical or evaluative they are intended to develop students AO1 abilities, predominantly the identification of information and use inference skills. The accompanying PowerPoint can be used to peer-assess and complete gap filling activities. Following each chapter’s comprehension questions there is a creative ‘love of reading activity’ which is equally as important as the comprehension questions which fosters a love of reading in our students. Opportunities to share and celebrate students’ creative responses also supports this love of reading. The Reading Cannon is designed to sit alongside the core KS3 curriculum with one lesson per week dedicated to reading. Students can either complete the questions and creative responses in the booklet provided. Students can also use the reading cannon novels as part of their accelerated reader quizzing when they have finished them.
