As Head of Dance at Horizon Community College I have rewritten lots of SOW, resources and other bits and bobs. These might be really useful to people who are short on time or need some guidance/inspiration for the new BTEC TECH course/ developing ks3 SOW
This is an introduction to the new 2021 Component 3 brief for the BTEC TECH award in Performing Arts.
Designed for students to be taught and work remotely the ppt has an introduction to the 2021 brief, some top tips and three exploration tasks for students to begin their initial research/ideas generating.
This resource includes a few slides of information that students can use for inspiration for the Component 3 brief “Vantage point”
It also includes a Pitch sheet for students to complete featuring space for them to fully plan their initial ideas onto one sheet.
I will be then sharing all the pitches with the class for them to see who might have similar ideas to them before making groups.
This could also just be used as an exploration task and evidence generating for the component.
This is a lesson I intend to deliver to my y11 students ahead of their COMPONENT 3 IDEAS LOG controlled asssessment. The ppt uses tips/bulletpoints from BTEC to allow students to see what is required of them during their controlled assessment of the IDEAS LOG. The ppt includes another CREATION CANVAS ( i will print this A3) that students can use to plot out their notes for the task-this can also be broken down and used for the controlled assessment as their notes.
The ppt also has some checking exercises around making detailed points using PIE structure and Paddy MCGuiness themed highlighting peer assessment.
The resource also comes with a simple WORD template that students can use to practice structuring a response.
This is a remote learning lesson for Swan Lake Reloaded. It includes a series of tasks where students need to identify, describe and evaluate stylistic features of the piece.
Video links are includeded in the ppt for students to watch and compare.
Currently using this for y8/9 students remotely but could be used in a classroom or also with BTEC students if they were studying this piece for Component 1.
This resource has been used most successfully with our current y8/9 students. It is a SOW at desks so classroom based but with fun activities for students to take part it with some movement at desks in some tasks.
The SOW explores the following
Lesson 1- Stylistic Features of professional repertoire.
Lesson 2- Dance skills
Lesson 3- Types of Stimuli
Lesson 4- Responding to a brief
Lesson 5- Interactive Quiz
Lessons can be split as there is a lot of content, lesson 3 and 4 inparticular you could spread across 2 lessons each making a longer SOW
The bundle also features a knowledge organiser that students can use for home learning and there is a DO NOW task students can complete in books at the start of each lesson.
Any Questions about delivery please email jHunt@horizoncc.co.uk
This is a complete bundle that will help to support students in the first Phase of COMPONENT 3.
The pack includes an exam launch introducing the theme, marking criteria and potential inspiration and ideas. It also includes an initial workshop to explore the stimulus set for 2019.
In addition the pack includes a motif development lesson for students to start to build and track their ideas- many of my students had got 1 mins worth of material from this lesson alone.
A storyboarding lesson allows students to develop the motifs created and to start to formulate ideas about set/props/music/dancers needed for each section.
To complete the pack I have included a theory lesson so that students can prepare for their IDEAS LOG written task, this includes a slide that can be printed A3 for them to bulletpoint their ideas for the task. And a template to practise on.
This resource is a homework pack that i distributed to my learners over the half term. It gives them a brief and a written example , as well as some information on the physical skills to complete a physical skills audit. The work students produced was excellent and much more detailed as a result of this resource.
This bundle includes PPTs for all of the 5 Soldiers workshop lessons that I deliver. There are links to the live feed on youtube with appropriate timings so that students can watch the section. There are teacher links to material to learn for delivery in the workshops and there are also slides that can be printed to aid the activities and tasks. Each task has a progress and progress+ task criteria which helps to drive challenge.
This is a lesson created for remote learning. It is the first in a series of work called DANCE THROUGH THE DECADES where students will study a range of styles from various era’s.
In this first lesson students are asked to study the CHARLESTON, they are given a brief to create a series of information sources for a new exhibition and the lesson focuses around the key stylistic features of the style through watching and writing about it.
The lesson also features practical challenges that students can do either within the lesson or as additional home learning
The ppt also includes a knowledge organiser for the whole SOW
This SOW was created to meet the COVID safety guidelines whilst we teach Dance in a classroom.
The entire SOW is adapted so students are doing practical work at a desk throughout. Our y7 students have loved this BUT could easily be used for other ks3 year groups too!
We used the Spinners and Dice available from YPO as resources to accompany this although this could easily work with a home made spinner or coloured sticks etc.
This comes complete with a knowledge organiser, DO NOW task sheets and a full Dance Vocabulary Quiz for students to be tested on their knowledge.
It also comes with a bingo grid for students to track progress and for teachers to mark.
The booklet attached is for Performing arts so only the DANCE section (the first few pages is used)
This is the second lesson in the Dance through the Decades SOW designed for remote learning or in the classroom.
Features information on how to analyse stylistic features of Dance using RADS. Has a bingo game, knowledge organiser and extended written task as well as a practical tutorial and task for students to complete
This is an activity designed for students to work from home. I have set my y9 the challenge of completing 1 per week but you could challenge students to complete a line or full house.
Adaptable so you can change the tasks on here to anything else.
This Rosas Danst Rosas bundle includes ppt resources and sheets needed for an engaging set of practical and theory based lessons. This has worked wonderfully for our KS4 BTEC students during the COVID restrictions and is perfect for social distancing. It could however be a really fantastic SOW for KS3.
The full Rosas Danst Rosas site specific filmed piece is available to watch on Youtube if you search Rosas Danst Rosas and the links on the ppt go directly to the Rosas Remixed tutorials.
The SOW also features an opportunity for students to look at the Beyonce Plagiarism scandal and create a piece mirroring Rosas to the Beyonce track which students have LOVED
These are lessons 3 and 4 of the Diversity Black Lives Matter scheme of work and look at Using RADS to come up with choreography from a moodboard and then Physical and Expressive skills. The first 2 lessons and resources are free on my store
This is a handy resource to prepare students for the second written task for component 3- the skills log. The ppt features a skills log canvas slide that can be printed A3 for students to write bulletpoints on each area of the written task, a PIE themed structure tutorial, and has a paddy mcguiness themed peer assessment task.
This is a resource created for Component 3 of the BTEC TECH Performing Arts course. This is for DANCERS taking the course and should be delivered after the EXAM LAUNCH as an introduction to the theme and to allow students to generate some initial ideas.
The PPT has links to dance pieces that might inspire students, it also has two creative tasks based on the stimulus BLANK CANVAS and Disadvantaged Children. It includes opportunity and a sheet for students to record their ideas in rough format ready for the SKILLS LOG task. All sheets and resources needed are included. The ideas log should be printed A3 for best results.
This is for component 3 of the BTEC TECH award in performing arts. The resource is geared towards dance but could be easily adapted for drama in a matter of minutes. The mat features the main sections and questions related to them, key spellings, more interesting connectives and a space to put in information about the component 1 practitioners you have studied.
This is a student booklet for COMPONENT 3, It has a few dance related pages but could be adapted easily for drama to include technique pages etc. The rest is fully generic so can be used for either discipline this features the following pages:
Breakdown of criteria and theme brief.
Local Community mindmap of areas to consider.
Mind map page
Pitch page for students to formulate an idea for a piece that they can share with their group.
Final group idea page with space to justify how the idea meets each section of the brief.
A scene/section planning table to note down the structure of their piece scene by scene.
Rehearsal logs x8 to log what they are working on, targets and actions for the next rehearsals.
Techniques grid to allow them to tick off and make notes when devising for dance- this could be easily adapted to fit dramatic techniques instead
Verbal feedback log
Choreographic devices page with information to help students when devising/developing.
Technique and motif development posters (on a seperate document)
I created this for my students studying COMPONENT 3 on the BTEC TECH award. It is just a really simple way for them to record ideas as they rehearse etc and then when they complete the skills log they can refer to this when creating their notes. The concept links to BLANK CANVAS-just for fun, so they use all the blank space on the blank canvas to write down their ideas and then at the end of the lesson reflect using the questions in the paint splatters.
This resource is a task for students to create a knowledge organiser based on the Physical Skills needed in Dance.
It includes the task and a helpful ppt of information that they can use to help them get started.
THis was useful in helping students to be able to understand the Physical Skills before they had to really use that knowledge in their milestone reviews/evaluations of themselves/peers
