Under the Sea (also lighthouse / starfish) EYFS / KS1 / SEN, selection of topic based resources

A hotchpotch of various resources I used with my ASD specialist provision class during a recent Under the Sea topic. My class were mixed ages and varied widely in ability (P4 to approx Y1/Y2 ability) so the resources reflect this. These resources are suitable for any age group who are working at this level, and also suitable for mainstream. There are 10 files included: L is for lighthouse - simple level, tracing ‘l’ and colouring items that start with ‘l’ S is for starfish - as above but ‘s’ Sea Creatures - match photo to image (simple reasoning / develop generalising) Lighthouse Facts - 2 A4 worksheets for basic lighthouse facts. 1 page is words only, 2nd sheet is supported by symbols. Lighthouse Factsheet - very similar to above but slightly prettier - used in a previous year with a group who were more able and could manage with more visual distraction. Lighthouse intro - basic powerpoint Draw and label a lighthouse - simple A4 sheet Starfish ‘eat’ or ‘live’ sorting sheet Starfish fact sheet - A4 sheet for learners to complete Under the sea describing words - topic related pictures, learners needed to find a describing word for each picture (e.g. ______ boat ) 2 copies per A4 page

Everybody's Free (to wear sunscreen), vocabulary worksheet and crossword.

I used this for an interview lesson. It did turn into the interview lesson from hell - however I don't think I can blame the worksheet. It was designed for KS4 pupils. I later tried the lesson with my own KS3 pupils and it went much better. Matching task using vocabulary (which is likely to be unfamiliar) from the song "Everybody's Free (to wear sunscreen)'

KS1 Science 'Staying Alive' topic, sorting tasks / activities

(0)
Resources made for Science Week with a focus on ‘Staying Alive’. We learnt about the difference between living and non living things, that animals including humans grow from babies into adults, that some animals grow inside their mother while others hatch from an egg, children kept a food journal for later learning about a balanced diet. Before learning about basic needs, children attempted to complete a mind map, adding to this later. Living / Not Living / Never Lived sorting activity / workstation task What do you call a baby… table to complete 5 day food journal - table for students to complete (Monday to Friday) Egg or Mum? Sorting activity / workstation task - did this animal grow inside its mother or hatch from an egg? Human basic needs - male and female mind map activity, pupils to add what is essential for human life. Designed for KS1 / KS2 children with autism but also suitable for mainstream learners or older learners with SEN.

ASD / SEN / EYFS basic numeracy, identify and sort 1 -3, P Level, Pre Key Stage

I used this to develop very basic counting skills in a child with significant needs. It can be used as a cut and paste worksheet (3 worksheets if you print the table 3 times) or laminated and used as a re-useable sorting / workstation task. I also used the laminated cards to play counting games with the child - giving him a selection of cards (all of the cards would have been overwhelming) and asking him to find 3 apples / 2 bananas etc. Once he became more confident with this, the next step would be to give him a selection of cards and ask him to find all of the threes / all of the twos etc. As this child was particularly motivated by superheroes, I included some superhero cards too.

Apple tree numbers to 10, SEN / ASD / EYFS / KS1. One to one correspondence / ordering to 10

(0)
I made this for a little boy with autism who was working at mid P Levels. This was to develop his basic one to one correspondence of numbers up to 10 and ordering numbers. The activity is suitable for mainstream or any aged learner who is working at a basic maths level. There are 10 A4 sheets in total: 5 have 2 cards on 1 A4 sheet. These sheets have apple trees with a numbered basket (1 - 10). The idea of these was that the child places the matching number of ‘apples’ on the tree. For apples I used red counters or small red pompoms. There is an A4 apple tree with a space to place a number card on - this could be used in 2 ways: Adult (or peer) places up to 10 ‘apples’ on the tree and the child has to find the correct number card or the adult / peer places a number card in the space provided and the child has to place the correct number of ‘apples’ on the tree. The other pages have apple themed number cards to use with the A4 apple tree. They could also be used on their own for ordering, identifying which number comes next or is missing…or print twice and use as a memory game. This activity would be best laminated / velcroed. Its a bit of a random addition but as he could also rote count in 10’s to 100, I included number cards for 10’s numbers to develop his ability to recognise the numbers.

Colourful semantics / Narrative ASD/SEN - Emergency Services

(0)
Colourful Semantics / Narrative - Interactive book with an Emergency Services theme. Who?-doing?-what? sentences. I laminated this to create a book, attaching with keyring rings. The child or young person goes through the book identifying who is doing what in each picture. For example: ‘Police officer-walking-dog’ or ‘Fireman-sliding-pole’. Tips: When printing, I printed the last 3 pages twice, using the first copy as a baseboard and chopping the second copy to make individual cards, which I attach with velcro to the baseboard. This works best for me as it keeps the pieces together and is easy to see if any cards are missing. While the child is becoming used to this activity, I talk them through each stage, encouraging them to identify ‘who?’ first, then ‘doing?’, then ‘what?’ Once the sentence is complete, I encourage them to repeat the sentence as a whole. If a child struggles to identify from a full page of options, try offering them a choice or two cards, gradually increasing the number of options as they become more familiar with the activity. Some children need prompts to really look at the picture and think about what they can see.

Category sorting - workstation task / TEACCH / Box Job Autism, Speech and Language

(0)
I use these for workstation TEACCH tasks in my autism classroom. I laminate the baseboard and cards and add velcro so activities are reusable but they are also appropriate for use as a stick and paste worksheet task. Set 1 categories are hot / cold Set 2 categories are less than 4 / 4 - 7 / greater than 7 Set 3 categories are bathroom / bedroom / kitchen

ASD / SEN Space craft instructions and PECS

(0)
This is an activity for children or young people with autism, or other special needs, including learning disabilities. Children use the PECS to request the items they need to make the craft, then follow symbol supported instructions to make the item. Included are the instructions and PECS to make a paper plate spaceship and a puffy paint moon. I’ve made these to send out to my parents in home learning packs but they are equally suitable for use in school.

Weekly weather log_chart, morning routine, SEN, ASD, KS1

(0)
Weekly weather recording chart / log. Colour coordinated for ease of use. Used for pupils with ASD / SLD to develop awareness of the weather, but equally suitable for other pupils with SEN or children in KS1. Resource can be used as a cut and stick worksheet, or could be laminated to be used more than once. It could also be blown up to A3 size and used as a whole class or small group resource. I have used a very similar resource as part of my class morning routine.

**File 1: 2 Christmas themed worksheets. ** A) Children to look at the picture and identify if the character is left or right of the Christmas tree. B) Children to look at the picture and identify if the character is in front or behind the Christmas tree. File 2: 2 Christmas themed worksheets. Cut and stick the Christmas characters, following instructions to place them left or right. There are 2 different worksheets, the 2nd has simpler language and the key word is highlighted. I also accidentally forgot to delete the first page which is a duplicate from File 1.
Phonics clothes peg cards, KS1 / Autism / ADHD / SEN

Phonics clothes peg cards, KS1 / Autism / ADHD / SEN

(0)
Children read the word and attach clothes peg onto the appropriate picture. To reduce the possibility of guess work, many of the pictures are of items which are similar to the word if read incorrectly, for example ‘scare’ shows pictures for ‘scar’, ‘scare’ and ‘share’. Three sets of cards are in pack, 15 cards in each set, so 45 cards in total. Cards need trimmed and ideally laminated. I designed these for my learners with autism / ADHD as a more interactive way to practice reading, but they are also suitable for KS1 / SEN.

SEN / KS1 Adding single digits to 10, doubling single numbers, car themed activity.

(0)
4 A4 sheets in total - 2 car parks and 2 sheets with corresponding cars. 1 activity is based on adding 10 to numbers from 0 to 10 and the other is based on doubling single digits. A cut and stick activity. Learners are given the car park sheet and have to work out the sum and stick the correct car in the car park space. Sums are on the car park places, answers are on the cars. I designed this for a Y2 learner with autism and limited motivation in maths as he loved cars. It did capture his interest and engaged him well. Other pupils who weren’t quite as fixated on cars still enjoyed the activity. Also suitable for mainstream pupils working at this level, or older pupils with SEN.

Creation Story, Interactive Book, SEN, ASD

I made this book as a weekly starter for a weekly RE lesson with a term theme of ‘Creation’. The books were laminated (whole page) and bound. I printed the last page twice and cut out the 2nd version so pupils had cards to match with each page in the book. I used the 1st version as a base board to store the cards when not in use. Used with children with ASD / learning disability.

Red Riding Hood basic literacy selection, KS1, SEN, ASD

A selection of Little Red Riding Hood activities I used in literacy with my ASD class. There is quite a lot here, all at quite a simple level - my learners were all at P Level to Reception / early Y1. The activities are also suitable for mainstream children working at the above level, or older learners with SEN.

Shape bundle, simple velcro tasks / worksheet, ASD, SEN, KS1

(0)
Selection of 2D and 3D sheets which I have used as reuseable velcro tasks in my ASD classroom. Also suitable for use as cut and paste worksheets. ‘I can name shapes’ - 2 tasks, one matching shape to shadow, other is a shape labelling task. I laminated the main sheets whole, then cut out the shapes / shape names and added velcro. Learners match the name / shape to the baseboard. I have also left space on the baseboard for a strip of velcro to be added to keep the pieces together and ensure they don’t get lost when not in use. ‘real life shapes’ - picture cards of items which can be used in a range of ways, including sorting. ‘shape sorting - straight_curved’ - Another velcro task, laminate base board and pieces, pupils sort shapes by whether they have a curved edge or not. Also suitable to be used as a worksheet. ‘Shape colour and size’ - 2 x A4 pages. Page one has shapes which differ by colour, page 2 has shapes which differ by size and colour. I used these with SEN pupils in a range of ways, including as an attention and listening activity. E.g. “give me the red circle” (set 1) or “give me the big pink triangle”(set 2) All activities also suitable to be made up for home learning, especially when repetition is helpful for learners with SEN.

Year 3, groups of / multiply by 3

Created for mixed age SEN class of children with autism, roughly following Y3 white rose scheme of work. Children begin to explore grouping in 3, repeated addition, bar models, simple word problems (as my children particularly struggle with any form of worded question!) and drawing their own representations.
