I've been a primary school teacher in the UK for over 16 years and most of that time has been spent teaching Year 6. I am passionate about English and inspiring children through creative writing. However, I do believe it is important to give them a good grounding in grammar but believe this can be taught through engaging and creative texts. I use a mixture of techniques including from Talk for Writing and Power of Reading, but don't stick rigidly to their principles.

Poetry - Greek Monster

(1)
Here are resources for a few days focusing on poetry, with a particular focus on language choice and the effect it creates. This could link with a reading lesson on author's purpose. I taught this before teaching an instructions unit on 'How to Defeat a Monster' and while studying our history topic of The Ancient Greeks. We also linked it to art by creating masks . It is suitable for Upper KS2 (Year 5 and Year 6). It contains flipcharts for use with Activ Inspire.
