These templates are bright and colorful and are great to use when students are learning all about character traits, vocabulary, synonyms and definitions of words. These word maps will assist students to consolidate their understanding of character traits. These graphic organizers can be used for any grade level. Teaching students new vocabulary is a vital skill for students to learn and will also assist them with their comprehension skills of interpreting meanings of words. On each word map template - there is a character trait, boxes for sentence, picture, meaning and synonyms. In each box students write: • the meaning of the character trait (can use dictionary definition or write meaning in their own words) • write the character trait in a sentence. • write synonyms for the character trait • draw a picture of a character displaying that character trait These vocabulary activities would be great to use in: Reading and Writing Activities, Literacy Centers or Morning Work. Character Traits Yes/No Game is a perfect resource to use as a book companion after reading the story, ‘No David’ by David Shannon. By playing this fun and interactive game, it will assist students to make inferences about characters, expand their vocabulary and consolidate their understanding of character traits. **The game consists of: ** 2 heading - yes/no teacher instructions 2 character cards - David and Mom 48 character trait cards This yes/no game can be played with 1-2 players, small group or played as a whole class. To play as a group: Students sit around a circular table or on the carpet. Place the headings yes and no in the middle of the circle. If group of 6 students, give each student 8 character trait cards to place under the yes or no heading, and put the remaining 4 character trait cards aside. Students take it in turn to select a character card and sort their cards under the correct heading. Ask each student to provide evidence or a reason why they think the character displays that character trait or not. Option 2 - Play Corners - whole class game Stick the heading yes in one corner of the room and no in another corner. Teacher calls out a character trait. Students walk to the yes or no corner. Select a student to give a reason why they went to the yes or no corner for that particular character trait. If the students went to the wrong corner then they are out of the game. Keep playing until you have a winner or small group of students who are left. By playing this game regularly in class students will have a deeper understanding about character traits. This game also assists the teacher with class discussions about character traits and reasons why students believe a character has a particular character trait. Martin Luther King Jr. - Character Traits Yes/No Game is a perfect resource to use to assist students with consolidating their udnerstanding of character traits. By playing this fun and interactive game during 'Black History Month', it will assist students to make inferences about Martin Luther King Jr., expand their vocabulary and provide evidence as to why they believe the character traits match Martin's character traits or not. Product Use ♥ Literacy centers ♥ Assessment ♥ Whole class game ♥ Play with a buddy or independently ♥ Small group work This yes/no game can be played with 1-2 players, small group work or played as a whole class. The object of the game is for student to sort the character trait cards under the yes or no heading. If they think Marin Luther King displays a particular character trait they place their card under the yes heading, if not they place it under the no heading. There is full instructions included in this kit on how to play the game as a whole class, in pairs or in small group work. All of the character trait cards are handed out evenly to each of the players to sort under the correct heading. Students are to provide a reason or evidence as to why they placed their card under that heading. For example if a student selected the character trait 'leader' they would place the character trait card leader under the yes heading because Martin Luther King Jr. was a leader when he gave a speech to the world. (see preview for example). Students take it in turns until all cards are placed under the yes or no heading. There is also a variation to the game where you can play corners as a whole class. The teacher places the yes heading in one corner and the no heading in another corner or the room. He or she then calls out a character trait card from the pack and the students walk to the corner of the room that they think is correct. Select a student to give a reason to why they chose that corner of the room. The game is finished when there is a winner or small group of students left.
