A resource for class or peripatetic teachers in primary education to assist in teaching total beginners. Intended as a gentle and gradual introduction to music reading. You will get two PDF booklets: Recorder notation and diagrams (fingering charts), including a how-to guide Piano notation INSTRUMENT This method is for the standard soprano recorder. THE METHOD The Beginner level consists of 12 lessons which are essentially 8-bar music exercises. Each exercise introduces a new note/rest length or another musical symbol, with lessons named after the topic they cover. The notations are formatted in landscape orientation for use on electronic devices or printing. FOR WHOM? This method is recommended for students in primary school education without any previous music knowledge. RECORDER NOTATIONS & DIAGRAMS To assist young learners, the notes are colour-coded by pitch. The fingering charts are following the colour-coding of the notes, making them visually part of the notation. The 12 lessons cover only 4 note pitches; the rest are introduced at the Intermediate level. Lesson names / topics covered Music Fractions (1/4 + 1/8 notes, A-B ) Half note Quarter Rest Half Rest Three Notes (G-A-B) Repeat Dotted Half Note Dotted Quarter Note Four Notes (G-A-B-C) Waltz Pickup bar Triplet HOW TO GUIDE The How To Guide is a single-page resource added to the Notations booklet. It is a tool to help young learners visualise and internalise the basics of playing the instrument such as proper fingerings, diagram perspective and relation to the notations. It consists of several photos of recorder fingerings linked to the appropriate diagrams and notes on the staff. PIANO NOTATION Piano notation is provided for teachers or intermediate/advanced students, with the right-hand notation following the melody and the left-hand providing an easy accompaniment. The piano notation also includes chord names. OTHER BEGINNER-LEVEL RESOURCES This resource is in the D-major scale. Other resources in this series that use the same melodies include Ocarina (D*), C-instruments, Harmonica (in C), Ukulele © and Guitar (G). /*While the Ocarina and Recorder melodies are identical, some of the melodies of the other instruments are modified to the fingerings and ease of accessibility for beginners./ NEXT-LEVEL RESOURCES The ‘Beginner level precedes the ‘Intermediate’ and is followed by the ‘Nursery Rhymes 1’ level. PHILOSOPHY (the purpose of the method) By simplifying notation and adding colours, note names, tabs and diagrams, make reading music notation easy and accessible, allowing the young performers to focus on what matters: rhythm, tempo, fingering, note lengths and clear tone, The melodies are made as interesting as possible within their limitations, allowing a wide range of young learners to understand and follow their inner logic.

The method includes two PDF booklets: Ukulele tabs & Chord Charts Chord diagrams & how to read them guide THE METHOD The Beginner level consists of 12 lessons which are 8-bar music exercises. Each exercise introduces a new note/rest length or another musical symbol. Lessons are named after the topic they cover. The notations are formatted in landscape orientation, to be used on electronic devices or printed. FOR WHOM? This method is recommended for students in primary school education without any previous music knowledge. TABLATURES (MELODY) At this level, notations are not used. Rather, the standard ukulele tablature is utilised, containing 4 lines representing the 4 ukulele strings, with numbers for the frets to be pressed. The fret numbers contain note parts (stems, flags and beams) to indicate the length of notes. Instead of notes, note names are given below the tablature staff, allowing the students to start grasping the music theory through the eyes of the ukulele, and not the other way around. To assist young learners, the tabs and note names are colour-coded by pitch. The 12 lessons cover only 4 note pitches; the rest are introduced at the Intermediate level. The chord strums are represented with the standard strumming symbols for guitar/ukulele, with up/downstrum signs on top of each strumming note. Chord names are given above the strumming staff. The method starts with two easy chords and new chords are introduced gradually. When new chords are introduced, they are marked in the subtitle of the appropriate lesson. The HOW TO GUIDE This is a single-page resource attached to the main booklet, packed with information that might be useful to beginners. It visually presents the ‘mirror perspective’ of reading tabs, containing an image of the ukulele with the neck presented as the 4-line tablature staff, with specific info about reading tabs. THE UKULELE CHORDS GUIDE This is separate booklet with four sections. The parts - a quick presentation of the parts of the ukulele The Fingering Diagrams: a tool to help visualise the chord diagrams in their vertical position The Chord Charts section explains how to read chord charts, chord names and strumming patterns The Chord Diagrams section contains major, minor and 7th chord diagrams, colour-coded by pitch. A continuation of the ‘Beginner’ Method, with notes spanning one octave, intended as a gentle and gradual introduction to music reading. You will get four PDF booklets with notations: C-INSTRUMENT Piano accompaniment Rhythmic Melody Guitar tabs & chords INSTRUMENTS THAT CAN BE USED All instruments in the C-major scale: chime bars, bells, xylophone, glockenspiel, steel (Chinese) tongue drum, kalimba (thumb piano), boomwhackers; and also piano, guitar, percussion etc. THE METHOD The method consists of 12 lessons which are essentially 8-bar music exercises. Continuing from the 4 notes (C-D-E-F) and other symbols from the ‘Beginner’, this level introduces more note/rest lengths and other musical symbols. The lessons are named after the topic they cover. All lessons/topics are listed below. The notations are formatted in landscape orientation for use on electronic devices or printing. FOR WHOM? This method is for students who have completed the Beginner level. It may be used as a stand-alone at your discretion. C-INSTRUMENT NOTATION The formatting of the notation follows the ‘Beginner’ level, with large, coloured notes and note names under the notes. PIANO NOTATION Piano sheet music is provided for teachers or intermediate/advanced students, with the right-hand part following the melody, and the left-hand providing an easy accompaniment. Note names are inscribed in the note heads and the notes are coloured by pitch. The piano notation also includes chord names. RHYTHMIC MELODY It contains the rhythms of the melodies in a 2-line percussion stave (low and high sounds), coloured by length. The notation includes musical elements such as tempo indication, numbered bars and beat numbers, making it ideal for teaching note lengths to young students. Can be used as introductions to the lessons or for playing percussion from notation. Each Rhythmic Melody lesson also contains a 1-2 bar ostinato suggestion, which could be used for drummers wishing to play steady rhythms instead of reading notation. GUITAR TABS They contain the melody, chord names and strumming indications. To be used by intermediate/advanced guitar players who already play the guitar to some extend and want to join the class with their instrument.
