New GCSE - Rusting

(0)
New GCSE lesson on rusting for the AQA syllabus. Previous lesson I had the students set up the practical (nails in different conditions) to be ready to look at in this lesson. Differentiated throughout and scaffolded exam question also provided for plenary or homework. Learning Objectives: Describe what rusting is and the factors that cause it to happen Explain how different methods can prevent rusting from occurring Justify why alloys are used
GCSE Chemistry: Glass, Ceramics, Composites and Rusting

GCSE Chemistry: Glass, Ceramics, Composites and Rusting

(1)
Two lessons, with one on Glass, ceramics and composites and another on rusting. Both differentiated throughout and exam questions included (with one scaffolded for support). The first lesson includes making different types of concrete by having different ratios of ingredients, with their strength to be tested at the beginning of the next lesson (rusting). Rusting lesson has an experiment to test the conditions needed for rusting to occur. Learning Objectives: Explain who ceramics are made Explain how different properties are related to their functions Compare the physical properties of glass, ceramics and composites Learning Objectives: Describe what rusting is and the factors that cause it to happen Explain how different methods can prevent rusting from occurring Justify why alloys are used
Metal Ores and Mining

Metal Ores and Mining

(0)
KS3 lesson used to teach about metal ores and extracting them from the ground. Learning Objectives: Describe why metals are found as ores Explain the impact of extracting these ores from the ground Analyse the impact on humans of extracting ores from the ground
New GCSE - Hydrocarbons
ls6372ls6372

New GCSE - Hydrocarbons

(0)
New GCSE lesson on hydrocarbons and introducing alkanes to the students. When looking at the different properties of the different length hydrocarbon chains the practical demo I did was to show them 'short chain' alkanes and 'long chain' alkanes and compare the two. The students then wrote down the results a table which is shown in the lesson. Learning Objectives: Describe what crude oil is and where it has come from Draw out and identify alkanes using molecular and displayed formulae Explain the properties of different chain length alkanes
New GCSE - Life Cycle Assessments
ls6372ls6372

New GCSE - Life Cycle Assessments

(0)
New GCSE lesson on Life Cycle Assessments for the AQA syllabus. Looking at writing LCAs for paper vs plastic bags and touching on a little recycling. Learning Objectives: Describe how LCAs are used Explain the drawbacks of LCAs Analyse how recycling can affect the environment
New GCSE - Chromatography
ls6372ls6372

New GCSE - Chromatography

(0)
New GCSE lesson on chromatography for the AQA syllabus. Looks at calculating the retention factor of food colourings. Differentiation throughout and exam questions included. Learning Objectives: Describe what chromatography is Explain the steps in creating a chromatogram Calculate the retention factor of different food colourings
New GCSE - Bond enthalpy
ls6372ls6372

New GCSE - Bond enthalpy

(0)
New GCSE lesson on bond enthalpy for the AQA exam board Learning Objectives: Recall the energy changes in bond breaking and making Explain why reactions are exothermic or endothermic in terms of bond enthalpy Calculate the energy transfer in reactions using bond energies
Displacement Reactions

Displacement Reactions

(0)
KS3 lesson on displacement reactions Learning Objectives: Describe how metals can displace other metals Explain what a displacement reaction is Predict the outcome of reactions
New GCSE - Cracking
ls6372ls6372

New GCSE - Cracking

(0)
New GCSE lesson on cracking, explaining how the process works and why we do it for the AQA syllabus Learning Objectives: Describe the differences between alkanes and alkenes Explain what the process of cracking is and why we use it
Maths in Science

Maths in Science

(0)
A lesson created for the maths department to use during science week, looking at graph work and relative formula mass. Can be used in science lessons too! Differentiated throughout. Learning Objectives: Describe what is needed to draw a graph Calculate the relative formula mass of compounds Analyse equations to work out the mass of unknown substances
Blast Furnace
ls6372ls6372

Blast Furnace

(0)
Lesson looking at the blast furnace and using displacement to extract the iron. Includes the experiment using a matchstick to extract iron (instructions in the lesson). Has a fantastic (in my opinion) plenary using Lego characters to answer questions. The students collect different strips of paper with different questions and Lego parts to construct a Lego character, the students loved it! DIfferentiated questions throughout. Learning Objectives: Describe the process of extracting iron Describe how carbon is used in a blast furnace to remove metal from its ore Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of the process
New GCSE - Covalent Bonding
ls6372ls6372

New GCSE - Covalent Bonding

(0)
New GCSE lesson on covalent bonding for the AQA syllabus. Differentiated tasks throughout and a little reflection on ionic bonding. Learning Objectives: Describe the bonding between non metals Compare the difference between ionic and covalent bonding Draw out Covalent bonds
New GCSE - Sewage Treatment
ls6372ls6372

New GCSE - Sewage Treatment

(0)
New GCSE lesson on sewage treatment and the steps involved for the AQA syllabus. Practical involved was the distillation of sea water and the tests involved before and after. The information sheets mentioned in the power point were pages printed from the text book. Learning Objectives: Explain the processes involved in testing the salinity of water Explain the process in treating sewage Analyse the stages in the treatment of sewage
