Maison Claire Fontaine is a French language immersion and activity centre for UK school children based in the beautiful Burgundian countryside. We have been producing these videos during the pandemic to hopefully provide the opportunity for a bit of Burgundy to find its way to UK school children whilst they cannot travel to Burgundy themselves. We offer all of these resources for free but of course hope that they might inspire you to find out more about us and perhaps even consider a trip to us at some point in the future. We all hope to be able to once again provide travel opportunities for children and create those lifelong memories that they have so sadly missed out on in recent times. We would also ask that if you have found them useful you could share them with others as well as promote our online French lessons and conversation classes to your pupils, fellow teachers and parents. Our teachers would love to hear from anyone who would like to improve their own French speaking with fun, enthusiastic and experienced French native speakers based here in Burgundy. We value your feedback and would also welcome any other ideas you might have for resources that we could look to create that you would find useful. We look forward to hearing from you but in the meantime enjoy a little glimpse into our life here. A HUGE thank you for your help. Alex, Mark and The Maison Claire Fontaine Team

A la découverte de Vézelay takes the listener on a tour of the magnificent medieval village of Vézelay in the heart of Burgundy. A typical example of Burgundian patriomoine. On the edge of Avallonais, Vezelay is a major site for Christianity. The beautiful Church situated on a hill at the top of the charming village was granted the title of Basilica by the Holy See in 1920 and is dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalen whose relics are displayed for veneration in the crypt. It was named as a UNESCO world heritage site in 1979 and provides one of the 4 starting points in France for the pilgrim route to Santiago de Compostela. Thomas Beckett chose Vezelay for his Whitsunday sermon in 1166, announcing the excommunication of the main supporters of Henry II and threatening the King with excommunication too. This resource includes a link to the video to accompany the commentary, a set of GCSE style questions and a full French transcript. La gastronomie bourguignonne

Food plays a very important part in French life here in Burgundy a region particularly famous across all of France and indeed worldwide for its fine food and wines. Avallon is a medieval market town situated in a very rural part of La France Profond . The Saturday morning market dating back centuries still provides locals with the majority of their weekly shopping needs. It still remains a core part of the rhythm of life in the town. In this video we talk to market sellers and one of the 5 independent bakers in the centre of town to find out what Burgundians feel about ‘la gastronomie bourguignonne’ and how important it is to them. Accompanying the YouTube video this resource includes a full transcript of the audio, a sheet of key words and a set of multiple choice quiz questions. Within the description of the YouTube video there is also a link to an interactive version of the quiz.
