Power & The People: The Impact of The Peasants Revolt

AQA GCSE history lesson for The Power & The People thematic unit. In this lesson we look at the successes and failure of the revolt and the short & long term impacts. The starter is a simple retrieval practice quiz based on Nando’s spice levels. We start by recalling the events of the revolt. The pupils are shown a map of medieval London with significant locations of the revolt, they have to match the events to the locations. We then look at the death of Wat Tyler and two different sources. I just discuss with my pupils what may or may not have happened. We then look at the successes and failures of the revolt. The pupils create a table in their books and draw a scale to visually show how they think the revolt may have succeeded or not. We then look at the significance of the revolt. The pupils complete a wheel of life and annotate to explain why they have scored it what they did. A Key Stage 3 lesson, used as part of a Welfare State unit of work on the establishment of the National Health Service in 1948. We complete quick retrieval starter on the discovery of penicillin to begin with. We then discuss what happened to people when they got ill before the NHS. We look at the Beveridge Report and the pupils complete a reading text analysis by reading the text and answering the questions around the outside of the template. We then look at the changes made by the Labour government. The pupils rate these changes in terms of how useful they were to ordinary people and explain their impacts. We then move onto the formation of the NHS, we watch a public information video created in 1948 and the pupils answer questions about this. We then look at a further clip on the NHS beofre asking the question ‘Is the NHS Britain’s greatest ever achievement?’. AQA GCSE Geography lesson for the new specification Unit 2A: In this lesson we look at urban planning and how it can solve three challenges: squatter settlements, traffic congestion and an uncertain future. We start with a “which statements are true?” grid based on the Lagos unit of work with sound effects as well. We then look at urban planning and how it can solve Lagos’ challenges. Firstly squatter settlements. We view two clips of the floating school and communities in Makoko and the pupils annotate a diagram to explain how the floating school can help solve the challenges of urban slums in Lagos and provide a sustainable solution to education. We then look at traffic. The pupils use hexagons again to explain how each solution would potentially provide better quality of life for the residents. We finish by looking at the future challenges Lagos faces. The pupils then rank each challenge based on their seriousness and explain why they have ranked them in such a way. We finish with GCSE-style question on urban planning in an LIC or NEE and a plenary on floating communities. This is an hour long lesson for AQA History GCSE or Key Stage 3 on women;s roles in WWII. The lesson begins with a starter using a recruitment poster as a discussion point. From there we look at two examples of women’s roles during WWII, the pupils will answer questions on a video notes sheet. We then use a source extract to create a diagram on the varied roles women undertook at both home and abroad before completing a 4 mark source interpretation question. AQA GCSE Geography Lesson from the Nigeria: a Newly-Emerging Economy section. The lesson is roughly an hour long. We start with a photo showing an illegal crude oil refinery in Nigeria and discuss what this reveals about he country and its natural resources. We then look at Nigeria’s political links to other organisations such as OPEC and the United Nations. We ask which of these are most significant to Nigeria’s development. We then look at Nigeria’s two main exports sectors, crude oil and agriculture where the students annotate a text extract to show their understanding. We then look at where Nigeria’s exports of crude oil go to by creating a flow line map. We then answer a GCSE style question worth 6 marks with guidance should the students need it. AQA GCSE Geography lesson for Unti 1A: The Challenge of Natural Hazards. there is a retrieval practice starter grid which will just need filling out by the teacher with appropriate questions. Pupils begin by looking at the location of earthquakes and volcanoes by plotting their location on a map using longitude and latitude. Pupils then describe the pattern using T.E.A (trend, examples, anomaly). We then look at the plates and margins. The pupils use description of the plates locations to work out where they are then descriptions of their movements to draw on arrows of the plates direction of travel. We examine the link between the locations and plate margins and briefly explain the anomalies by looking at hotspot volcanoes. We then tackle a GCSE-style question with guidance for the pupils if needed. Key Stage 3 lesson for a scheme of work on The Rise of The Dictators. In this lesson we recap on the causes of the Russian Revolution. We then introduce the idea of Communism and Karl Marx’s beliefs. The pupils look at the scenario he envisaged may result in Communism and summarise the stages and draw symbols to represent each stage. We then look at Lenin’s actions to change Russia. The pupils divide his changes into good ideas and bad ideas and explain why. We then look at how much the West feared communism in a ‘thermometer’ analyis. The pupils have to justify how much the governments of Western democracies feared communism at that time. We finish with a ‘to what extent’ question. AQA GCSE history lesson for The Power & The People thematic unit. In this lesson we look at the New Model Army and events of the English Civil War. We start with a simple retrieval practice quiz ‘whose graves are these?’. We have a brief recap of the short and long term causes of the Civil War using picture prompts. We then look at the outbreak of war and Cromwell’s changes to the army. The pupils are asked to explain why each of the changes Cromwell introduced made them a more effective fighting force. We then look at the differences in the soldiers of both forces and the pupils label the diagrams. We then move onto the events of the war and the pupils complete a ‘Swingometer’, by marking on the dial who they think the war is going in favour of. After briefly looking at tjhe second Civil War the pupils then complete a ‘How useful is this source?’ question on the Soldiers Catchisme. In the lesson we look at What Nigeria’s economy looks like and how it has changed over time. The pupils will do some interpretation of pie charts. They will then create a graph to show Nigeria’s employment structure. We move on to create a diagram that is annotated to explain why Nigeria’s economy is developing, before looking at the growing manufacturing sector. The pupils will then answer a GCSE -style question using points for guidance. AQA GCSE history lesson for The Power & The People thematic unit. In this lesson we look at the events and the Impacts of The American Revolution. We start with a retrieval practice instagram themed starter on the Pilgrimage of Grace, but works with any historical event. We begin we a recap using a source of the Boston Tea Party, the pupils have 10 mins to answer as many questions as possible on the source. We then look at how the war started and the events leading to Yorktown. We look at Yorktown in detail and the pupils complete some work on the events of the battle by summarising and answering questions. We then look at he impacts of the American Revolution for Britain, America and The World. there is a summary sheet to help with this but sometimes we spend longer conducting research on the impacts. We then compare Magna Carta with the American Revolution for similarities and differences. There are some examples, and we finish with a biographical poem on George Washington. We start with a photo interpretation stater where students can create their own questions and answer them based on a series of command words… We then look at the location of squatter settlements in Lagos The pupils are given a map of lagos and the six figure grid references for the squatter settlements to plot on the map, we then consider why they are located where they are. The pupils then look at some statistics for Makoko and annotate the table to suggest problems that residents of Makoko face, they also create a field sketch with some annotations on. We finish with GCSE-style questions on a squatter settlement with some guidance on how they should answer the question. AQA GCSE Geography lesson for the new specification Unit 2A: In this lesson we introduce Lagos as a case study for a city in an NEE. We start with the pupils looking at a variety of photo’s trying to work out where the photos might be taken. They are all of Lagos of course, this is to introduce the pupils to the variety, and inequality in the city. We then look an introductory video to Lagos to gauge the pupils first impressions. The pupils then go on to describe to location of Lagos. I use the C>L>O>C>K formula but this can be changed to whatever you like. We then look at some key facts or indicators about Lagos. We compare this to the same key facts as London. the pupils use this information to explain what Lagos is like and what challenges it may have. This allows the pupils to understand how it compares to a city they may well be familiar with. We finish with a GCSE style question on the importance both regionally and internationally of Lagos. AQA GCSE Geography lesson for unit 2C: Water Management section. The lesson is approximately one hour long. We start the lesson with a photo mystery around a hydro-electric dam, we use this as a way to start discussing what dams have to do with increasing water supply. The pupils then go on to use a foldable template to look at four different ways that water supply can be increased. The pupils will also create separate sections for examples of dams & reservoirs and also water transfers. We then look at the global pattern of desalination. The pupils will answer questions from the map. We finish with a simple quiz about water surplus (and deficit) using some of the knowledge they should have gained from the last three lessons. In this lesson we look at the relative power balance between government and trade unions after General Strike and the events and outcomes of the Miners Strike. We start with a historabble retrieval practice starter, a bit like scrabble but pupils must find Power & The People related words. We then look at the nationalisation of industries after WWII. Pupils then complete a road timeline “The Road to Unrest” using information cards and also create a power balance line graph to show the shifting balance of power between the Government and trade unions. We then look at the Miners Strike in more detail. The pupils then compare the Miners Strike with The General Strike for similarities and differences using a Venn diagram. The pupils then create a bio poen for either Arthur Scargill or Margaret Thatcher. We also have an extentometer plenary. AQA GCSE history lesson on how the Moroccan crises increased political tension amongst the political powers in Europe. We start with a quick retrieval practice quiz. We than look at the location of the ?Balkans and how the declining power of the Ottoman Empire left some European Powers looking for opportunities for annexation. The pupils consider a source from the time and answer some questions. They then look at the events of the Balkan Wars and complete “The Road to War” diagram in their books, visually recording the increasing tension. We then consider the results of the conflict and the pupils consider how that might lead to further war. We then tackle a 16 mark question and the pupils have some guidance on how to complete that.
