Common Mistakes at GCSE Grade 4-5

(1)
PowerPoint with starter activity to give students practice in finding, describing and correcting maths questions where common mistakes have been made. Printable worksheet included with 15 Questions that have been solved incorrectly which range from averages, ratios, percentages and algebra.
Percentage of amounts, increase and decrease.
mettepettemettepette

Percentage of amounts, increase and decrease.

(0)
This worksheet starts with a grid where the students find 50, 25, 75, 10, 5 and 1% of amounts. Then they should use the grid to combine answers to find other amounts by adding and subtracting, e.g 99% is the same as 100% - 1% or 27% = 25% + 2x1%. The sheet then builds on this with questions on increase and decrease, still using the grid they first completed as a support. Suitable for KS3 and Foundation KS4 - GCSE new grade 3-4 Answers to questions on the 3rd page.
Sequences and nth term

Sequences and nth term

(0)
two sided worksheet - generating first 5 terms, 20th term and 50th term. Finding the nth term, generating simple quadratic sequences, continuing quadratic sequences and finding the nth term (simple) and also some logic / algebra questions on sequences, deciding whether a number is in a certain sequence and using equations with the unknown on both sides. 2 sides of answers also included. Useful for key stage 3 and 4 GCSE New grade 3-5
Equation of parallel and perpendicular lines
mettepettemettepette

Equation of parallel and perpendicular lines

(0)
This is a two sided work sheet with an example and 5 questions of finding a parallel line through a given point, practice of finding the gradient of a perpendicular, and 4 questions on finding the equation of a perpendicular line through a particular point. Includes all answers I suggest it is supported by plotting the graphs in Desmos or a similar graph plotter tool. Suitable for KS4 - New GCSE grade 4-5
Reverse Percentages using bar models
mettepettemettepette

Reverse Percentages using bar models

(0)
This powerPoint tackles the topic of reverse percentages by using Singapore Bar Models to make the questions more visual for students - this is a topic which often costs students their grade as they instinctively use 'regular percentages' in stead of reverse percentages. use a bar to model 100% then either add ot subtract from the bar to model what the new amount is worth. Includes examples, questions and answers. GCSE new grade 5

Fail safe, never get this wrong method of factorising quadratics where the squared term has a coefficient. Do it now starter linking back to expanding double brackets and factorising quadratics without coefficients. Several animated clear examples Many questions provided with answers. Extension question with answer 6 mark plenary exam question with answers

Power Point lesson for GCSE grade 4-5 Do this now activity of expanding pairs of brackets with answers. Reminder activity of how to expand and factorise simple two term quads with answers. Explanation of how to factorise Questions on how to factorise positive quadratics with answers. Explanation of how to factorise with negatives and NEVER get them wrong Worksheet of questions of factorising quadratics which contain negatives with answers. Extension/plenary activity mixing factorising and expanding expressions in a grid, again with answers.
Standard form revision
mettepettemettepette

Standard form revision

(0)
An ideal worksheet for practicing converting between 'normal' and standard form numbers with both positive and negative powers, also some questions on multiplying and dividing numbers in standard form. Works nicely as revision or homework for KS4 or very able KS3 students working at old NC level 8/old GCSE grade C (new GCSE grade 4

Differentiated powerpoint on solving equations which involve expanding brackets.
mettepettemettepette

Differentiated powerpoint on solving equations which involve expanding brackets.

(0)
Start the class by working through the first tree slides, which are colour coded, green, amber and red. You could use the first question to model, second for students to try themselves or even better get the whole class to attempt on mini whiteboards, or get a student to the front. Page 4,5,6 need to be printed (and cut) beforehand - they are also colour coded and contain dominoes activities that go with the examples you have already worked through - some students may choose to start green, some amber - very few red. once they have completed an activity they can move to the next set of dominoes. This PowerPoint activity can be supplemented with worksheets, a textbook resource, or can be extended for the very clever students, to develop their own dominoes for others to try.
Powerpoint on algebraic proof
mettepettemettepette

Powerpoint on algebraic proof

(0)
This PowerPoint goes through how to prove mathematical statements - how to set up and prove LHS=RHS and how to set up and prove questions with consecutive integers as well as even and odd integers, and proving an expression is divisible by a given integer too. The PowerPoint includes animated examples as well as lots of questions with hints on how to solve them - all the questions are also on a printable slide at the end.

mettepettemettepette

Energy Bills lesson Gas and Electricity.

(0)
PowerPoint lesson which starts with images of gas and electricity meters and discusses what they are, why they are read, and how the use of these are calculated. Then an example is calculated and the conversion of pence to pounds highlighted. There are a number of questions for the students to complete too. Suitable for KS3 and 4 - approximately at Grade 3-4
Factor Theorem and Factorising and solving Cubic equations
mettepettemettepette

Factor Theorem and Factorising and solving Cubic equations

(0)
A quick recap of factorising standard quadratics reminds students of GCSE factorising and then goes onto introduce the factor theorem. Several questions with answers on proving factors using the factor Theorem. Then examples on how to use the reverse box method to do algebraic long division - by far the most fool proof and student friendly way of doing it - this is followed by a number of exercises which applies both the factor theorem to find the first root, and then using the reverse box method to factorise fully and solve.
