Example character description of King Hrothgar from Beowulf. Paragraph to describe appearance as a model for children. Year 5 writing features identified and highlighted to aid discussion etc with children. Task was for children to highlight and label features and then think of their own ideas on a similar level.

Example text describing King Hrothgar which includes lots of features / techniques required for year 5/6 writing EXS/GDS. First sheet- text with objective for children’s books. Second sheet- questions to check understanding and start to explore the description. Third sheet- teacher reference- features / techniques to discuss and highlight with children/ Labels given to aid discussion with children. Lesson- children highlight and label features and techniques explaining them. The next lesson children wrote their own description using images from the book as well as previous planning.

Editable sheets for writing targets- child friendly targets taken from National Curriculum. One sheet for year 3/4, one sheet for year 5/6. Fully edittable in word format- images and text. First 2 sheets are in ‘letterjoin’ font and second 2 sheets in ‘Arial’ font.
