Designed specifically for AQA A Level English Literature, Modern times: Literature from 1945 to the present day, this resource offers four short extracts from unseen modern texts followed by tasks based on critical views of Walker’s The Color Purple and Williams’s A Streetcar Named Desire . Four practice questions included. Could be used as a discussion PowerPoint or as a group activity, using the slides as worksheets. I’m using it with my Year 13s as a revision activity, leading up to them writing responses to the questions included.

Exploration of descriptive writing in Pullman's 'The Ruby in the Smoke', leading to students writing descriptively based on images (preparation for new GCSE English Language Specification AQA). A good hour, if not more, of lesson activities here.

A couple of lessons exploring the dramatization of 2.1 and exploring the language used by Demetrius and Helena. I've used with a year 8 class, but you could use with older students too. Might need some adapting for KS4.

An in depth exploration of the play's penultimate scene, which explores the downfall of Macbeth and his character as a tragic hero. Includes pair work, group work and individual writing tasks, as well as key terminology.

The extract is a little longer than students would be given in an exam, but I will be using it as a tool to teach Magic Realism in the modern novel. To use just as a PowerPoint, or to print as worksheets to use alongside the PowerPoint, this resource visually presents the changing nature of the relationships during the course of the play. I use as an ongoing resource alongside the teaching of the play. A good plenary for the end of each act. Suitable for Key Stage 3

Using the events from the opening of Pullman's novel, the activity gets students to consider newspaper articles taken from 1872 in terms of language and style. It leads to a creative piece, where students create their own newspaper. An hour long lesson.

A selection of 16 quotes from the novel, presented visually for display. I've used PowerPoint as printing the slides to A4 whole pages keeps formatting as desired. There is also the option of printing to A3 for individual posters, or print the whole lot for a colourful display.

A series of discussion based questions, which prompt student to compare the presentation of 'truth and deception' in 'A Streetcar Named Desire' and 'The Color Purple'.
