This is a series of 25 lessons to introduce children to the next sequence of written graphemes. They are numbered to show the order in which they should be taught and begin assuming no prior knowledge of letter formation (although it would be necessary to have taught some Phase 1 style lessons). They are designed to be used daily, introducing a new grapheme each day. The lessons follow a very simple Revise, Teach, Practise, Apply model which is similar in every lesson so that children can build familiarity and confidence. Teachers should read and understand the slides prior to the lesson. Children will not be able to access these independently. These can be delivered in line with the 2021 Reading Framework, although this is not an accredited government phonics programme. Phase 2 is also available for free through this store and further phases are available upon request.

This diagram can be adapted to represent the general approach to behaviour management in your school. It can be displayed in classrooms in order to demonstrate that there is a consistent approach to behaviour management while still providing teachers with the opportunity to implement these strategies in their own style.
Map of primary grammar terminology

Map of primary grammar terminology

(0)
“English grammar” is a loose term covering patterns and conventions which are often ill-defined and frequently broken. This is part of what makes the English language so rich and expressive. Primary GPS should be viewed as a much stricter set of rules and terminology that can be taught concisely and systematically. As well as preparing for the end of KS2 GPS elements, pupils who engage with this vocabulary and high-quality teaching over time will be able to explore GPS successfully in order to talk about and develop their own writing. Clear progression and good teacher subject knowledge are vital in order to teach GPS effectively at primary level. This grammar map intends to provide consistent definitions of key GPS terminology and to provoke subject knowledge reflection for teachers. This could be used to provide CPD for whole staff or as a guide for English leaders within school looking to increase consistency within across year groups. Also very helpful for Y5 and Y6 teachers as they assess pupil knowledge and gaps. Provided separately are also the individual labels so that this map could be produced as a large display for reference.

Guided Reading sequence for Clockwork (UKS2/KS3)

(0)
A sequence of lessons to prompt discussion and exploration of ‘Clockwork’ by Philip Pullman. This sequence allows the children to move quickly through the text, but would require guidance, adaptation and additional discussion from an adult. It is strongly suggested that the teacher has read the novel and the lessons before beginning.
