EAL support booklet - Functional English

I find teaching functional skills English , I’m getting more and more students who in fact need ESOL specialist classes. I’m not an ESOL tutor but due to the increasing demand to teach English as a second language and fill ESOL gaps in students knowledge I have developed a number of resources of common problems ESOL student have, which I have complied into a 35 page support booklet which I now give my ESOL learners. The idea is the students use this booklet to support their own self-study and English language development or I use it to set targeted and individual homework. The booklet has explainers and tasks to comeplete and ideas on how to further develop own self-study. I find it quite useful and I hope you do to. You can adapt the booklet to suit your own cohort or levels. Please be aware the the TES preview can distort the look of the resources, and this is not always a true reflection.

It comes with both reading and writing sections and uses extracts from Bill Bryson and Fredrich Engles, who both talk about the city of Manchester. Please keep in mind that TES previews do distort the look at the resource and this is not a true reflection. Hope it helps.

This resource has been designed to be incorporated into sessions or to be used as homework or revision. Based around a news article about a female drag queen, the resource has both reading and writing practice with language and vocab focus. Tes provides a limited preview, so for this reason I have included screen-shots to help give you a better view of the material. The resource is designed to be altered to suit your own cohort or sessions. Hope it helps.

This resource can form a part of a larger lesson on the theme of sustainability or be used as homework or quick revision. You can adapt the resource to accommodate your own cohorts and teaching style. Please keep in mind that the TES preview is limited and can at times distort the look of the resource, and this is not always a true reflection. Functional Skills English - reading mini practice - sustainability

I have created 3 texts (1 being a quick quiz) around sustainability to help increase students awareness and also practice some key questions in the F/S reading exam, largely organisational and language features. I use it as a recap / reinforcement task at the start of my session, however it can be adapted to suit your own needs. Please be aware the the TES preview is a limited preview and can at times distort the look of the material. Hope it helps.

Hunger Games - reading practice, L1 and L2

This resource is developed to allow scaffolding and differentiation. I have used a review of The Hunger Games and structured questions, based on the L1 and L2 reading papers. One is a scaffolded and chunked piece of reading, breaking the review at each paragraph followed by questions, the other is a full page of reading with questions levelled slightly higher. Resources like this can help the students in class who’s reading skills need further development and are struggling with the rest of the class, whilst also supporting those progressing well in class and allowing some exam practice. Resources can be adapted to suit your cohort and student needs. Please keep in mind that the TES preview is limited, and so I have added screenshots to give you a fuller look at the resource. Hope it helps

Functional English - plurals

(0)
I have created this sessions to help support those FS learners where English is not their first language. One area I find many struggle with is the application of plurals, and area which lets them down at L1 and L2. This session has been created to follow initial delivery of plural rules and is designed to practice the application of plurals within the learners own writing. This session is learner lead and recaps plural rules, asks the learners to proofread / correct plural errors. We then move towards different types of text (article vrs eye witness account) and asks the learner to further develop writing in that style. Underpinned is need to take ownership of learning and we take the time to demonstrate and create ideas on how to take a class task and expand on it in order to use for meaningful self study. I created this session for a specific learner in mind, however you can adapt this session to cater to your own cohort. Please keep in mind the TES preview is limited and may not give an accurate reflection of the resource as a whole. Hope it helps.

I have created a series of writing prompts for learners of L2 functional English in response to limited past papers / mocks. Tasks range from full 35 min writing tasks to starters where the learner is asked to write only the opening paragraphs. Types of question covers persuasive letter writing, formal and informal writing, report writing, online forums, letters of complaint and articles. Please keep in mind that the TES preview often distorts the look of the materials and is not always a true reflection. I hope it helps.

GCSE English Language paper 2 question 5 - Climate Change

(0)
Climate change is a hot topic of the moment and is engaging young people around the world to help start make a difference. To help support this and raise awareness in young people I have created this full lesson based around the subject of climate change and changes a everyday person can make. This pack is a complete lesson with enough material to fill a 3 hour session. It contains plenty of group and paired activities, 5 - 10 minute reading and discussion activities, video clips, an information pack which can be used for independent research for the final writing task based on paper 2 question 5 of the GCSE English language exam. It also underpins issues regarding climate change and also aims to raise awareness among young people by looking at the Nobel peace prize candidate Greta Thunberg, an amazing young lady who started the “School strike for climate change” protests at aged 15. There are various articles in which students look at language, sentence structure, language and tone and is best suited to classes who have already done work on language features. The resources are selected to include a range of levels and abilities and can be altered to suit your students needs and tasks not used in the session could be set as homework. This session can also double up to set presentations to help hit all the requirements of the GCSE spec. Please be aware that the TES preview can sometimes distort the look of the resources and is not always a true reflection. Hope it helps.

I support vulnerable students with their English with weekly 1-2-1 hour long sessions. The sessions I create are designed to create interest in the student and to revise skills taught in their main session. This session starts with developing Haikus to engage the student and get them thinking of different vocabulary and sentence structures, it is also useful for underpinning spelling techniques and proofreading. We work our way up to L1 reading practice with a piece of text about Frida Kahlo. Feel free to adapt for your own needs. Hope it helps

FUNCTIONAL ENGLISH - hair and beauty embedded E3 / L1 workpack

(0)
Having taught Functional Skills English within an FE setting, I understand how difficult it can be to reach students within a curriculum area and to encourage engagement with English. Often not being specialists in those areas ourselves as English Teachers, embedding can be a challenge. My largest challenge was often with students of hair and beauty and so I devised this work pack which worked fantastically well. This pack embeds E3 and L1 English elements into areas of hair and beauty such as face shapes, hair disasters and nail art, incorporating celebrity culture. This pack builds as you move through it, looking at areas such as reading for information, proofreading, identifying correct homophones and descriptive / persuasive writing. I found with my groups that this did not need to be a taught session but rather they ran with it themselves and engaged independently with it, leaving me to act in a supportive role rather than a lead delivery role. This is down to the group and paired activities within the pack, discussion topics and the options for students to make choices and to design their own nail art. This pack encourages a positive attitude towards English and helps students to see how it can help in their chosen industry. IHope it helps.

L2 Functional English writing - investigation

I find it useful, when close to the exam period, to take students through an exam answer as if they were the examiner and awarding the marks. This helps to clarify in the students mind the skills and knowledge they need to demonstrate in the exam and to identify any areas of development within their own writing skills. This session is based on that premise. This session has enough resources to fill a 2 hour session. It takes 3 sample answers from the exam board and the class examine each one and uses a simplified mark scheme to award marks. The class is then asked to honestly critique their own skills next to the criteria and develop a revision plan to work on up until their own exam. The session is based around SOLO teaching method which chunks up learning and increases in difficulty. I find this helps to put the writing exam, and students own skill sets into perspective and aids in self study. Hope it helps

We start simple and focus and read and obtain questions and work our way up to exam style questions. Hope it helps

I run 1 hour long support sessions in GCSE English for students who are more vulnerable. I have short and simple sessions to support these students with their learning. This session cover paper 2 question - the compare question and focuses on how to structure an answer (point, quote, infer - you may use a different format). The materials start simply with the analysis of two images and works it way up to two short samples of different era texts. The materials are enough to fill an hour support session, feel free to adapt to suit your own timetable and cohort. Hope it helps

This 7 page booklet id designed to help students with the reading component of their Functional Skills exam. The booklet can be used as in class resources, revision or as self study. Based on a article by Friends of the Earth, the booklet focuses on simple and easy ways we can help become more green in our every day routines and underpins purpose of text and audience questions from the exam. The questions in the booklet are a combination of low level, opinion based and exam based questions. They range from multiple choice to more structured answers asking for reasons or quotes to support . Developing writing skills Functional English

This session was designed for a L2 student F/S who’s first language wasn’t English but was strong enough to not be put in a ESOL class. They struggled with writing, using a range of vocabulary and sentence structures. This session was designed to try and broaden their skills in this area and their confidence with writing. The session looks at using synonyms, LY / ING sentence starters, language features and descriptive writing techniques such as using the senses to describe. The tasks all combine together to build up to a short piece of descriptive writing, piecing all elements together, with the session ending with a Functional English styled question. This session was designed for a 1-2-1, but can be adapted to suit your own cohorts. Please be aware that the TES preview only gives a sample of the materials and can at times distort them, and this is not always a true reflection. Hope it helps

Structural Features Paper 1 Question 3 - Stand By Me / The Body extract

(0)
This fantastic lesson looks at question 3 from paper 1 of the AQA English Language exam - spec 8700. Using the work of Stephen King "The Body" this lesson uses power-point, paired activities, video and activity sheets to focus on how authors use Openings and Endings to convey symbolic meanings, in this case - the end of childhood and innocence. The lesson comes with plenty of paired, timed activities to help support less able students and a discussion on inference to help stretch and challenge the more able in your class. I have also introduced a mnemonic for the more commonly used structural features called ROW OF CLONES to help students learn a range of techniques authors may use in their writing which my students found incredibly useful last year. The final aim of this lesson is for the student to be able to write a full Point, Quote, Infer answer to this exam question. This resource is adaptable, will fill and hour to hour and half lesson, engaging, quick paced and comes with fun starters and plenaries. Please keep in mind that this movie is a 15 certificate and using this resource for anyone under that age maybe worth some consideration. Mild language used in the extract, however as I taught in a college, this was fine to use. Hope it helps.

Proofreading for punctuation - Functional Skills

This is a 5 page resource perfect for Functional Skills students or lower level students. This resource starts with a formal letter and works it way to informal messages sent on Facebook. It touches upon impressions made by poorly written messages. For higher level students this could be used as homework, and extension activity or as a starter or discussion about impressions made via social media. Please be aware that TES preview often distorts the resources and this is not a true reflection of how it looks. Hope it helps.

Divergent: Paper 1 Question 3 (structure) AQA English Language , 8700 spec

A great lesson which uses a wide range of resource types and teaching strategies to help students prepare for Paper 1 Question 3, Structure. This lesson uses the trailer and extract from the movie/book Divergent by Veronica Roth to engage students and help them look deeper into ways stories are told in order to interest a reader. To help them do this, this lesson uses a helpful mnemonic of commonly used structural features -ROW OF CLONES and focuses on repetition, opening / endings and setting. This lesson is designed for a 3 hour session, it uses team and paired work, support grids and stretch and challenge inference class discussion. Quick 5/10/15 min activities keep the lesson at a good pace and allows for information to be delivered in bite sized chunks with a short self assessment plenary. Hope it helps
