Students will learn plenty of new vocabulary words through engaging and challenging activities. They will work individually, in pairs or in small groups to include variety in lesson dynamics.
Before getting to read the texts, students can work in pairs to match words with pictures. The story about the legend of Nian is split into two parts. All the reading activities can be done in pairs or small groups. During the pre-reading activity students will be faced with a wordle containing all the words from the story and they will be asked to form three complete sentences by using as many words as possible from the wordle. After that, they will engage in a gap filling activity to get to know the first part of the story. They will, then, engage in a writing activity to propose an alternative part 2 to the legend. The second part of the story is presented through two activities. During the first students work on a wordsearch and only then they will fill the blanks with the words from the previous exercise. The unit will be concluded with a revision crossword which will bring them back to the very first activity to review the vocabulary words learned in it.

Mini ESL unit about types of crimes and criminals. Students will engage in a number of vocabulary related activities as well as in reading short passages. They will learn 18 different types of crimes and criminals through words and definitions matching and a challenging crossword. They will also speak and write about crime.
►LEARNING OUTCOMES◄
GENERAL: Students will learn plenty of new vocabulary words through engaging and challenging activities. They will work individually, in pairs or in small groups to include variety in lesson dynamics.
SPECIFIC: This mini unit is based on the theme of crime. The initial stage is based on two speaking activities: a conversation and a brainstorming activity to get your students to talk and to assess their knowledge of the topic. These activities are then extended to a whole class discussion and even into a writing task. The second stage sees students learning 18 types of crimes by matching words with definitions. They will also learn how to call the different kinds of criminals who commit the 18 crimes mentioned through an engaging crossword. Both matching and crossword can be done either in pairs or small groups. The third stage requires students to engage in reading short stories and guessing the type of crime. This activity is important not only to practice their reading skills but also because it serves as a sample for the writing activity which will follow. The final step will get your students creating a short crime story. There is a guideline on the structure of the story that your students can follow. The students should not make the crime evident because once they are done they will read their stories and the rest of the class will guess the crime. These activities can cover a week or even more of teaching depending on the pace and the choices you make (suggestions are provided in the instructions).
Key words: arson, shoplifting, burglary, homicide, blackmail, fraud, robbery, assault, pickpocket, bribery, smuggling, forgery, kidnapping, mugging, hooliganism, vandalism, hijacking, trespassing.
